Xi’an Jiaotong is a national key university under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. Its predecessor institution was founded in Shanghai in 1896 and was split into two institutions in 1956: Shanghai Jiao Tong and Xi’an Jiaotong universities. Xi’an Jiaotong was included in the first group of universities singled out for priority development under the country’s seventh and eighth five-year plans. It was also included in the first group of universities to benefit from Project 211 and Project 985 status, and aims to become a world-class university. Xi’an Jiaotong offers programmes in nine areas including medicine, economics, management and philosophy. It includes 20 schools, eight undergraduate residential colleges, and eight affiliated teaching hospitals.

Xi’an Jiaotong University offers international students on-campus hostel and the dormitory buildings operate like a hotel. Various double rooms and single rooms are available to international students. For international student who chooses double room, the roommate could be assigned by the University or chosen by himself or herself after reaching University. Separate accommodations are provided to male and female students. There are rules and regulations for accommodation, students shall read carefully and abide after reaching University. The hostel rooms are provided with good living facilities and reasonable layout, including attached bathroom and shower, telephone set, TV set, air conditioner, central heating system, study desk, chair, wardrobe, bed and bedding, and an internet access socket. The grading for building type is based on total surface area and added accessories. There is a communal kitchen on each floor, provided with an electric stove and a washing machine. Water rate and basic charges of power are included in the accommodation fee. For excessive electricity charge, international students need to pay additionally. For internet fee, international students are required to pay according to their use. Besides, the dormitory buildings are furnished with classrooms, dining room and laundry. They are within easy walking distance of teaching buildings and library.
