BUMS education In India: Everything You Need to Know
In India, the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) program is an undergraduate study that instructs students in the Unani medical system, one of the traditional forms of medicine. This medical system, which combines Arabic, Persian, and Greek medicine, is founded on the teachings of the Greek physicians Hippocrates and Galen. The AYUSH ministry of the Indian government recognizes the Unani system of medicine, which is becoming more and more well-liked as an alternative to conventional medical care.
The BUMS program’s participants will acquire an in-depth understanding of the Unani medical system. The 5.5-year course spans 4.5 years of classroom instruction and 1 year of practical internship. One must have passed their 10+2 exam or any other exam that is equivalent in order to be eligible for this course.
The foundation of the Unani medical system is the idea of balance, which holds that the harmony of the body’s four humors—blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile—is necessary for optimal health. The Unani method places a strong emphasis on a person’s overall health and works to enhance the body’s innate ability to cure itself.
The Unani medical system treats illnesses with natural cures such as herbs, minerals, and animal products. A patient’s health can also be improved by unani medicine practitioners through dietary and lifestyle adjustments. Numerous illnesses, including diabetes, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and skin conditions, can be successfully treated by the Unani medical system.
Students who successfully complete the BUMS program can practice Hakimiyya or Unani medicine. Additionally, they can continue their education and work in the field as doctors, researchers, and teachers. There is a great need for competent and experienced individuals in the field of unani medicine because there is so much room for study and development in this area.
The National Board of Examinations’ NEET-UG Entrance Test, which is required for admission to the BUMS program, is followed by counseling based on exam results. The counseling process is conducted by the Ayush Admissions Central Counseling Committee (AACCC) of the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. The Union Government of India’s Department of AYUSH oversees AYUSH education in the nation.
The cost of pursuing a BUMS degree varies by institution and can be anywhere between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 7,000,000. The 5.5-year course spans 4.5 years of classroom instruction and 1 year of practical internship. After completing the course, doctors have two options: either they find employment or they continue their education by enrolling in one of the programs approved by the Ministry of Ayush, such as a Master of Medicine in Unani or a Doctor of Medicine.
Clinical practice, academia, research, management, and administration, as well as the production of pharmaceuticals, are among the many job choices available to BUMS graduates. Depending on the position, sector, and level of expertise, BUMS graduates can expect to make an average beginning salary of between Rs. 5 lakhs and Rs. 12 lakhs annually.
