Big Announcement for Medical Students: 75,000 New Seats to be Added in the Next 5 Years, Says PM Modi
In a significant development for aspiring medical professionals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a major expansion in medical education. On Thursday, he revealed that 75,000 new seats will be created in the medical field across the country over the next five years. The announcement was made during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, marking his 11th consecutive speech on the occasion.
This news comes at a pivotal moment, as it closely follows the Supreme Court’s verdict on the NEET exam dispute. The addition of these medical seats is seen as a transformative step for the nation’s healthcare education system.
Addressing the Issue of Students Going Abroad
During his address, PM Modi highlighted the growing trend of Indian students traveling abroad for medical education. “Even today, many of our youth are forced to go abroad to pursue medical degrees. Most of these students belong to middle-class families and spend huge sums, sometimes in crores,” he said.
He expressed surprise at the number of students leaving the country for medical studies and underscored the importance of strengthening India’s medical education system. “Today, around 25,000 students leave the country annually to study medicine abroad. This is a trend that needs to change,” he added.
Expansion of Medical Education in India
In the last decade, India has made significant strides in increasing the number of medical seats. PM Modi noted that the government has almost doubled the number of available seats in medical colleges, reaching nearly 1 lakh. The return of Indian medical students during the Russia-Ukraine war further highlighted the need for more opportunities within India.
In response to this growing demand, PM Modi announced the creation of 75,000 additional seats in medical colleges over the next five years. This move is aimed at reducing the dependence on foreign medical education and expanding opportunities for Indian students.
India’s Progress in the Space Sector
In addition to medical education, PM Modi also touched on India’s advancements in the space sector during his Independence Day speech. He emphasized how the country’s “vibrant” space sector is playing a crucial role in making India a global power.
“Our space sector is becoming more vibrant and dynamic. It is contributing significantly to our nation’s strength,” he said, adding that the government has implemented numerous reforms to modernize the sector. “We have freed it from the constraints of the past, and now it’s flourishing.”
With these announcements, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving both education and technology sectors, paving the way for a more self-reliant and advanced India.
