Karnataka Govt plans to allot 10% seats for domicile students, 100 Crore for development of UVCE

Karnataka Govt plans to allot 10% seats for domicile students, 100 Crore for development of UVCE

Bengaluru: The state government is thinking about prioritizing Karnataka domicile students for admissions to University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), with 25% of seats being filled through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

Dr M C Sudhakar, the Higher Education Minister, shared this information with the press upon his return from a trip to Indian Institute of Technology-Gandhinagar to analyze the approach. The minister explained that merely creating the institute does not equate to offering infrastructure.

The UVCE Act includes a clause to allocate 25% of seats based on JEE scores. He elaborated that our plan is to enforce this system to enhance the standard by admitting top-quality students and also to reserve 10% of seats for students from Karnataka in that 25%. He pointed out that not every JEE cleared student will secure a seat in the IITs.

Land Transfer and Initial Funding for UVCE Development

Higher Education Minister Dr. M. C. Sudhakar highlighted that the Karnataka government is actively engaged in the process of transferring 50 acres of land located at the Jnana Bharati campus for the development of the University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). This prime piece of real estate will serve as the foundation for constructing a state-of-the-art campus that aims to elevate UVCE’s status in the engineering education landscape.

The government has earmarked a substantial budget of Rs 500 crore for the comprehensive development of UVCE. This investment underscores the administration’s commitment to enhancing engineering education in Karnataka, making it competitive with leading institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). As a first step, Rs 100 crore will be disbursed to kickstart the initial phases of construction and infrastructure development.

While at IIT Gandhinagar, we examined their program, placement strategy, efforts to enhance quality, faculty, hiring process, financial situation, etc. He mentioned the goal is to improve UVCE by implementing top strategies from IITs, surpassing their model.
