Good news for medical aspirants in Telangana! The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to establish a Government Medical College in Bhongir, with an initial intake of 50 MBBS seats. Confirming this, the Principal of the Government Medical College (GMC) told The Hans India, “The college will start with 50 seats. We have secured the necessary posts for college operations, and beds have been arranged. Preparations are complete at the building where the college will function.”
This approval from the NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body, comes after prolonged uncertainty regarding the status of the college’s approval. When the government medical college was sanctioned for Bhongir last year, the State Health Department began preparing to upgrade the district hospital into a teaching hospital, with plans to commence operations from the old collectorate building on the outskirts of the town this academic year.
To facilitate this, the district hospital, previously under Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP), was brought under the Director of Medical Education (DME). Most of the required positions across various categories were filled according to medical college guidelines.
However, the NMC had been withholding the crucial Letter of Intent (preliminary approval) for the college. During the first NMC inspection on June 23, several deficiencies were identified in the proposed medical college building at the district hospital. In response, the State Government submitted a proposal to address these deficiencies, followed by an online inspection at the end of July. Despite the improvements, the college did not receive approval at that time. After a third appeal and further enhancements, the NMC finally granted permission to establish the medical college.
According to a report from The Hans India, 54 professors from various specialties have already joined the teaching hospital, which has a capacity of 220 beds. These professors are currently providing outpatient services at the district hospital, and expansion work has begun to add an additional floor to the hospital.
