IIT Bhubaneswar and AIIMS Bhubaneswar collaborate on AI for healthcare advancement

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) in Bhubaneswar have teamed up to work on artificial intelligence (AI) for healthcare. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday by the two prestigious institutes to continue their collaboration in advancing research for public health applications, including early disease and outbreak diagnosis, AI and data analytics, biomedical engineering and technology, disease prediction modeling, digital health, and the creation of tools, equipment, and tactics for diagnostic and therapeutic use.

IIT Bhubaneswar and AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s partnership will combine medical science and technology to deliver a better and more advanced healthcare service. The two institutions that make up the Center will concentrate on the development of specialized facilities and investigate the utilisation of cutting-edge medical technology for AI-enabled patient care services. Additionally, they will create and provide collaborative academic courses that combine technology and healthcare, as well as a system for sharing academic credit.

The MoU also covers the facilitation of training/reorientation programs, teacher and student exchange programs, and academic excellence programmes for each field. The partnership will inspire students to conduct research utilising cutting-edge technologies, according to the official sources.

The institutes have determined that they will focus on the areas of product creation, technological transfer, and industrial cooperation. Under this partnership, a cutting-edge research facility named the “Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology” has also been planned. The center will primarily focus on advanced characterization, biomedical signal processing, detector fabrication for imaging, additive manufacturing for tailored materials, and the creation of biotrackers and biosensors for mental health care.

According to Ashutosh Biswas, executive director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the collaboration will concentrate on the use of AI in relation to a variety of health disorders, as well as on the development of materials, apps, wearable sensors, image-based diagnostics, data sciences-enabled smart health monitoring systems, early warning systems, and other things.

Director of IIT Bhubaneswar Shreepad Karmalkar stated that the institutions would prioritize the creation of specialized laboratories. As a result of the partnership, MBBS and BTech students will be able to take brief summer courses, while PhD (PhD/MTech) students will be able to complete research dissertations and thesis work.

This collaboration makes the integration of medical research and technology for the provision of cutting-edge and effective healthcare services possible. Additionally, it will provide a foundation for high-tech research interest among students and advance public health applications.
