Cost of Scholarships
The MEXT Scholarship is a 100% funded program that covers:
- Tuition Fees: Full tuition fees at the chosen university are covered.
- Monthly Stipend:
- Undergraduate Students: ¥143,000 per month.
- Master’s and Professional Students: ¥144,000 per month.
- Doctoral Students: ¥145,000 per month.
- Airfare: Round-trip airfare from the applicant’s home country to Japan.
- Additional Allowances: Supplemental regional allowances of ¥2,000 to ¥3,000 per month, depending on the region of study.
Note: The stipend is subject to change based on the budgetary conditions of the Japanese government.
Eligibility Criteria for MEXT Scholarship 2025
The MEXT Scholarship has specific eligibility requirements for applicants:
- Nationality: Applicants must be nationals of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan. Japanese nationals or applicants holding dual citizenship, including Japanese, are not eligible unless they renounce their Japanese nationality before their arrival in Japan.
- Age: Candidates must be born on or after April 2, 1990. Exceptions may be made in certain circumstances (e.g., military service obligations, war-related disruptions), but personal reasons like economic hardship or family issues are not valid grounds for exceptions.
- Educational Qualifications:
- For Master’s or Doctoral Programs (First Stage): Applicants must have completed 16 years of formal education (or its equivalent) outside Japan, or completed a program of at least three years that is recognized as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
- For Doctoral Programs (Second Stage): Applicants must have a master’s degree or equivalent and must have at least two years of research experience at universities or research centers.
- Health: A medical certificate is required to confirm that the applicant has no physical or mental health conditions that could interfere with their studies in Japan.
Age Criteria
- For undergraduate and master’s applicants: Born on or after 2nd April 1990.
- Special exceptions are made only in cases such as military service or war-related education disruption.
Educational Qualifications
- Undergraduate Level: Applicants must have completed 12 years of education.
- Master’s Level: Applicants must have completed a 16-year education system or a 3-year program equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
- Doctoral Level: Applicants must have completed a Master’s program or equivalent.
Other Requirements
- Applicants must be in better health, both mentally and physically.
- Applicants should be willing to study in Japan for the full duration of the program and adhere to the scholarship’s terms and conditions.

To apply for the MEXT Scholarship, candidates must submit the following documents to the Japanese Embassy or Consulate:
- Application Form: Complete the official MEXT application form.
- Placement Preference Form: This form indicates your preferred university or research area.
- Study and Research Plan: Detailed explanation of your field of study and research objectives.
- Academic Transcript: Official transcripts from your current or previous educational institution.
- Degree Certificate: Graduation certificate from your last attended educational institution.
- Recommendation Letters: Letters from professors or academic advisors.
- Medical Certificate: A certificate proving that the applicant is physically and mentally fit for studying abroad.

If an applicant holds “Permanent Resident” or “Long-term Resident” status, it is not guaranteed that their original residence status will be reinstated after the scholarship ends.
