The National Medical Commission (NMC), India’s apex medical education regulatory body, has released the details of postgraduate (PG) medical seats available across the country for the academic year 2024-2025.
According to the data shared, a total of 49,772 PG medical seats in 81 specialities are distributed across 586 medical institutes nationwide.
The information, issued by the Secretary of NMC, Dr. B. Srinivas, was addressed to the heads of medical colleges, including Deans and Principals.
It provides a detailed seat matrix as of November 18, 2024, and a copy of the communication was also shared with relevant authorities across states and union territories, as well as key officials within the NMC.

The state-wise data reveals Karnataka leading with the highest number of seats (6,419), followed by Maharashtra (5,948), Tamil Nadu (4,649), and Uttar Pradesh (4,381). The detailed distribution is as follows:
