Required Minimum Scores for Admission

• Category: General and General-EWS

• Candidates from the General and General-EWS categories must score at least 50 percent of the possible points in NEET UG for the relevant academic year.

• Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes:

• Candidates from the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) must earn at least 40 percent of the possible points in the NEET UG exam for the relevant academic year.

• Candidates with Disabilities:

• According to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016, candidates with Benchmark Disabilities have different minimum mark criteria.

• The minimal NEET UG score required for Unreserved Category and General-EWS Category candidates with Benchmark Disabilities is at the 45th percentile.

• The minimal score needed in NEET UG for SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates with Benchmark Disabilities is at the 40th percentile.

It’s vital to remember that these minimum scores are required when a significant number of applicants in each category fall short of the required minimum score in NEET UG for any given academic year. In these situations, the Central Government, in consultation with the Medical Council of India, the Dental Council of India, the Central Council of Indian Medicine, and the Central Council of Homoeopathy, may use its discretion to reduce the minimum marks needed for admission to undergraduate medical programmes for candidates falling under the relevant categories. The downgraded grades, meanwhile, will only be valid for that specific academic year.

Candidates should be aware that these minimum score requirements could alter in response to government announcements and directives. It’s crucial to keep up with the most recent information offered by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the NEET UG official website.

On April 15, 2023, an amendment was made to the Information Bulletin of NEET (UG) 2023 – Clause 5.2.2. The eligibility of OCI cardholders for NEET (UG) is covered by this provision. The previous modification to the clause was published on March 4, 2023, in accordance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court Order dated March 2, in W.P. No. 891 of 2021.

The modified clause, it has been discovered, was unintentionally written in a way that did not adequately reflect the intent of the honorable Supreme Court order. A fresh corrigendum has been published as a result to correct the error.

In accordance with the ruling of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in W.P. (C) 891/2021 and related proceedings, the Ministry of Home Affairs in India recently modified the eligibility requirements for Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) applicants for NEET (UG), Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons with Indian Origin (PIO), and Foreign Nationals. Aspiring OCI, NRI, and PIO candidates are advised about the modified clause in Clause 5.2.2 of the Information Bulletin of NEET (UG) 2023 dealing with the eligibility of OCI cardholders for NEET (UG), which supersedes a previous corrigendum on the topic dated March 31, 2023.

Existing Provision

According to the previous regulation, to be eligible for admission against any seat solely allocated for Indian citizens, including paid seats at deemed universities, an OCI cardholder must be treated as a foreign national possessing a foreign passport. The revised clause, however, now states that admission to medical, dental, ayurvedic, siddha, unani, and homoeopathic colleges is open to Indian citizens as well as Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Foreign Nationals, depending on the rules and regulations established by the relevant State Governments, Institutions, and the Government of India, as the case may be.

OCI shall be entitled to the rights and privileges that had been granted to them prior to the notification of 04/03/2021, in accordance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court Order dated February 3, 2023, in W.P. No. 891 of 2021. The rights to which an OCI cardholder shall be entitled under the Citizenship Act of 1955 were previously specified by the Ministry of Home Affairs. An OCI cardholder will have parity with Non-Resident Indians in the matter of appearing for all India entrance tests such as the Joint Entrance Examination (Main), Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), or such other tests to make them eligible for admission only against any Non-Resident Indian seat or any supernumerary seat, according to clause (4) (ii) of the aforementioned notification. 

It is significant to note that holders of PIO cards and foreign nationals would not be permitted to sit in any seat designated for Indian nationals only. OCI/PIO will therefore be considered foreigners and will only be eligible for NRI seats, not Indian National Seats, including paid seats at recognized universities.

In accordance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court Order dated 03.02.2023 in W.P No. 891 of 2021, Clause 5.2.2 of the Information Bulletin of NEET (UG) 2023 has been modified to expand the qualifying requirements for OCI candidates. In accordance with the norms and guidelines established by the relevant State Governments, Institutions, and the Government of India, the modified clause offers OCI candidates the same rights and benefits as they were previously entitled to.

Medical aspirants across the country have shown immense interest in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Undergraduate (UG) exam, with over 21 lakh candidates registering for it this year. This marks a significant increase from the previous year, where 18 lakh 72 thousand students had applied for the examination.

The registration process for NEET UG 2023 was concluded by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on April 6, 2023. The exam is set to be conducted on May 7, 2023, and is expected to see over 20 lakh candidates taking the test.

Career Counseling Expert Parijat Mishra from ALLEN Career Institute shared that the increased participation could be attributed to various reasons, with the centralized admission system being one of the biggest factors. Mishra stated that earlier, admission was only given on MBBS seats, but now admissions are also done for dental courses, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Veterinary courses of AYUSH, paramedical, and nursing courses.

The NEET UG 2023 exam pattern remains the same as previous years, with the exam being conducted for a total of 720 marks. Each question carries 4 marks, and there is negative marking of 1 mark for every incorrect answer. Questions will be based on Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.

The exam will be held in a single shift between 2 PM and 5.20 PM in 13 languages, including English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. The exam city slip and admit cards are expected to be released by the end of April.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued a correction related to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2023. The correction pertains to the eligibility of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) candidates who wish to apply for UG medical programs in India. As per the revised rules, OCI medical aspirants can now apply for admission to all UG medical programs in India, subject to the regulations set by the authorities. Previously, OCI cardholders were only permitted to apply for admission to NRI or supernumerary seats.

As per the official notice, an individual holding Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status can now apply for admission to undergraduate Unani/Siddha/Homeopathy programs in India. However, this is subject to the guidelines issued by the respective regulatory bodies or counselling and admission authorities, which must conform to the policy decisions of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) and/or Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This applies to the rules, regulations, and notifications related to Medical, Dental, Ayurveda, and other related fields.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released a notice informing NEET (UG) 2023 candidates about a correction to Clause 5.2.2 of the information bulletin. This correction is in response to the judgment dated 03.02.2023 of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in W.P(C) 891/2021 and connected matters. The revised provision of Clause 5.2.2 in the Information Bulletin now pertains to the eligibility of OCI cardholders for NEET (UG). Aspiring OCI candidates for NEET (UG) 2023 are advised to read the amended provision of Clause 5.2.2 carefully.

The updated provision now states that individuals holding Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status can apply for admission to undergraduate medical, dental, Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy courses in India. However, this is subject to the guidelines set by the respective regulatory bodies, counselling and admission authorities, and in accordance with the policy decisions of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) and/or Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). These rules, regulations, and notifications related to admission must be followed from time to time.

According to the current provision, as per the Notification dated 4 March 2021 by the Ministry of Home Affairs, OCI cardholders have rights that are similar to non-resident Indians under the Citizenship Act, 1955. As per Clause (4) (ii) of the notification, OCI cardholders are allowed to appear for all-India entrance tests, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, Joint Entrance Examination (Main), Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), or other such tests, but only to be eligible for admission to Non-Resident Indian seats or supernumerary seats. However, OCI cardholders are not eligible for admission to any seat that is exclusively reserved for Indian citizens.

According to the Notification mentioned above, the Explanation states that OCI cardholders, as well as PIO cardholders, are considered foreign nationals, and they hold a passport from a foreign country, which makes them ineligible for Indian citizenship. As such, they are not entitled to seats that are reserved exclusively for Indian citizens. Therefore, OCI/PIO cardholders will be considered foreigners and can only apply for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) seats. They will not be eligible for Indian national seats, including paid seats at deemed universities.

What is OCI?

OCI, or Overseas Citizenship of India, is a status granted to foreign citizens of Indian origin that allows them to live and work in India without any time restrictions. The OCI card was introduced in 2005 by the Indian Government to cater to the needs of Indians residing abroad who desired dual citizenship. Since India does not permit dual citizenship, the OCI card was introduced as an alternative to providing certain benefits to foreign citizens of Indian origin. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2005 presented this option. It is important to note that the difference between NRI and OCI is vast, as the Constitution of India does not allow Indian citizens to possess dual citizenship. 

Individuals who are foreign nationals but have the eligibility to become Indian citizens at any time after 1950, and belong to a territory that became part of India after 1947, can register as Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). This eligibility also extends to minors of such parents.

In recent times, there has been an increase in queries regarding OCI and its advantages. The OCI card provides a high degree of convenience to foreign individuals who wish to reside in India while maintaining citizenship in another country.

NEET UG 2023 The registration period for the National Eligibility Cumulative Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2023 was launched by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Monday. Applying is possible at the official NTA website, neet.nta.nic.in.

18,72,343 applicants enrolled for the NEET UG exam in 2022, and 17,64,571 of them showed up at 3,570 different testing locations spread across 497 cities, including 14 places outside of India.

According to NTA data, Maharashtra had the most NEET UG registrations last year (2.55 lakh), with 2.4 lakh applicants showing up for the exam and 1.13 lakh passing.

With 2.29 lakh registrations and 2.19 lakh attendees, UP was the second-highest state in terms of candidates, after Maharashtra (out of which 1.17 lakh qualified). According to information provided by the NTA, 1.13 lakh candidates qualified, followed by Tamil Nadu (1.42 lakh registrations), Karnataka (1.33 lakh registrations), and Kerala (1.28 lakh registrants).

According to information released by the NTA, the number of candidates who registered for the NEET UG exam has climbed by 23% over the last four years, and the number of candidates who took the medical entrance exam has also increased by 25%.

A total of 15.1 lakh students enrolled for the exams in 2019; 14.1 lahks of them showed up for the exam. In 2020, these figures rose to 15.9 lakh registrations and 13.6 lakh attendance. The amount thereafter experienced significant growth, reaching 16.1 lakh registrations in 2021, of which 15.4 lakh appeared for the exam.

Following Covid, the number of NEET UG registrations soared to 18.7 lakhs in 2022, up more than 15%, and the number of applicants climbed from 15.4 lakhs to 17.6 lakhs, or 14.2%, as well.

Over the past four years, there has also been a growth in both the number of male and female applicants registering for the NEET UG exam. Male candidates climbed by 18.68% from 6.8 lahks in 2019 to 8.07 lakh in 2022, while female candidates increased by 26.1%. (8.3 lahks in 2019 to 10.6 lakh in 2022).

While the number of candidates has increased for both men and women from 2021 to 2022 by 13% and 17%, respectively, a similar trend has not been seen in the registrations of transgender candidates. In the last four years, the number of transgender candidates climbed by 83.3% (6 in 2019 to 11 in 2022), but declined from 15 in 2021.
