HEIs proposed “Earn-While-Learn” programme for students economically weaker students

An “Earn-While-Learn” programme has been proposed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to give economically disadvantaged students in higher educational institutions (HEIs) the opportunity to work part-time jobs. In accordance with the suggested plan, HEIs will hire students to work in any academic department on campus. Additionally, the UGC has created implementation guidelines for the programme.

 

The proposed programme intends to lessen the financial burdens of education for students from socioeconomically disadvantaged groups (SEDGs), help them pay for their education, assist them develop the skills and abilities that will make them more employable, and help them earn their education. The programme also attempts to raise the standard of education and give it a purpose. The suggested rules outline a number of options that should be made available to students, including library assignments, computer services, data input, and laboratory assistantships, among others.

 

Each student will receive a consolidated hourly rate of pay for the part-time work they complete, up to a maximum of 20 hours per week and 20 days per month. The programme gives students the chance to grow personally, acquire technical knowledge, and develop their entrepreneurial skills, preparing them to take on professional projects rather rapidly.

 

The recommendations were created in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which places a strong emphasis on meeting the needs of students who identify with the SEDGs. The proposed programme gives financially strapped students the chance to finance their education, acquire new skills, and earn work experience, all of which will improve their employability and open up better chances for them in the future.
