The journey to pursuing a Master’s degree in Medicine

About NEET PG (Uttar Pradesh)

NEET PG is the single exam for medical graduates that is conducted by NBE (National Board of Examinations) for MD/MS and PG Diploma courses across India. This is a national-level entrance exam where the exam’s score determines qualification for counselling, with the exam's score's percentile and it happens in multiple rounds. MCC manages this counselling process for AIQ holders and the rest is managed by the Uttar Pradesh state counselling authority for the state quota of MD/MS seats.

Uttar Pradesh, which is the most populous state of India, offers a large number of government and private medical colleges that are affiliated with Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU) and other reputed universities. Institutions like SGPGIMS, KGMU, BHU (IMS), Rani Durgavati Medical College, etc., are foundation colleges in postgraduate medical studies in the state.

The state has around 65+ medical colleges, among them being King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow and the Institute of Medical Sciences at BHU in Varanasi. DGME UP takes care of the medical education and it concentrates on keeping high standards of Training of doctors so that they can fulfil all the requirements of the health care in the state. Through measures such as increasing the number of government medical colleges and improving their infrastructure, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a role model in building a pool of qualified doctors and has contributed significantly to the country’s health care workforce.

Course Overview: PG and MD/MS Programs

Medical postgraduate (PG) education in India is a level of education that is pursued after obtaining the MBBS degree and several specialisations can be chosen for it. The two most common directions that a medical graduate can take through NEET PG results are MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery); the period for both of which is typically three years.

  • MD Programs: Non-surgical specialities focusing on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention within internal medicine and its sub-specialities. Some of the branches include General Medicine, Paediatrics, Radiology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, etc. Graduates from MD courses work in hospitals, research, or academia, concentrating on clinical or theoretical knowledge.
  • MS Programs: Common branches are General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT (Otorhinolaryngology) and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. MS programs cover practical sawbones work (surgical skills), perioperative care and advanced techniques.

- Clinical, Para-clinical, and Pre-clinical Streams in MD/MS

There is a clinical, para-clinical and non-clinical subject covered under both MD and MS courses. Direct patient contact bearing branches like Clinical branches (e.g. General Medicine, Surgery) and offering better career opportunities & stipend. Pre-clinical departments (such as Anatomy and Physiology) are also concerned with early, or foundational science, with relatively little patient contact, and many non-clinicians find themselves in teaching or research.

UP NEET PG 2025: Exam Pattern, Marking Scheme

NEET PG was held on August 3, 2025, with 200 MCQs covering clinical, para-clinical, and pre-clinical subjects taught at MBBS level. The test is bilingual, i.e English and CBT mode only. Candidates were awarded +4 marks for correct response, and 1 mark was deducted for an incorrect response. A criterion used was that the qualifying percentile was the 50th for the General category. Announcement of the results was earlier than scheduled August 19th, 2025.
