Who Can Apply for GATE 2027?
One of the important eligibility provisions for GATE 2027 is that candidates are not restricted to engineering and technology backgrounds.
Students currently studying in the third year or higher of a government-approved undergraduate programme in eligible disciplines can apply. Candidates who have already completed an eligible degree can also appear for the examination.
Eligible academic areas include:

The official FAQ specifically confirms that students in the third year or higher of B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. programmes can appear for GATE 2027, provided their programme meets the prescribed requirements.

No Age Limit or Attempt Restriction
There is no age limit for appearing in GATE 2027. The official FAQ also states that there is no restriction on the number of attempts.
However, qualifying for GATE does not automatically guarantee admission to a particular postgraduate programme. Individual institutes can have their own eligibility and selection requirements.
New DigiLocker Guidelines for GATE 2027
A major change in the GATE 2027 application process is the integration of DigiLocker.
The official GATE portal states that registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for Indian nationals. Candidates are advised to create or update their verified DigiLocker account before applying.
However, IIT Madras has also clarified that candidates with an unverified DigiLocker account can proceed with the application by selecting the default ID-proof option. Such applications will subsequently be scrutinised for the necessary documents.
New GATE Paper: Robotics and Automation
Another important update for GATE 2027 is the introduction of a new test paper in Robotics and Automation (RA).
The official GATE website also states that changes have been made to the XE, XH and XL sectional paper codes, while the syllabi for the GATE 2027 papers have been revised. Candidates should therefore check the updated syllabus before beginning their preparation.
GATE 2027 offers 30 test papers, and candidates can choose either one paper or two papers from the officially permitted combinations.
GATE 2027 Examination Pattern
GATE 2027 will be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT). The examination duration is three hours and the question paper can contain:

The official GATE website states that qualified candidates can use their scores for postgraduate and doctoral admissions in MoE-supported institutions, subject to the respective institute's admission requirements.
GATE scores are also used by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment.
