Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune is one of India's premier medical institutions and a recognized Centre of Excellence in medical education, research, and training. The internship is conducted in service hospitals recognized by the NMC. Upon successful completion, cadets are commissioned as officers in the Armed Forces Medical Services.

The 5 additional seats are allocated to candidates from friendly foreign countries, sponsored by the Government of India through the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defence.
Out of the 145 seats, up to 10 seats are reserved for SC/ST candidates, subject to fulfillment of all eligibility conditions.
• Candidate must be a citizen of India
• Foreign nationals of Indian origin may be admitted only after acquiring Indian citizenship or obtaining a certificate of eligibility from the Ministry of Home Affairs
• This condition does not apply to the five government-sponsored foreign candidates
• Candidate must be unmarried at the time of admission
• Marriage during the course is strictly not permitted
• Minimum age: 17 years by 31 December 2026
• Maximum age: 24 years as on 31 December 2026
Eligible date of birth range:

Candidates must meet the stringent medical fitness standards prescribed by the Government of India for commission in the Armed Forces. Medical fitness is assessed through a detailed examination conducted by designated Medical Boards.
Candidates must have passed in the first attempt with:
Subjects Required:

Minimum Marks:
• 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology
• 50% marks in English
• 50% marks in each science subject
Candidates must also have passed Mathematics at Class 10 level.

• Intermediate/Pre-degree examination
• Pre-professional or Pre-medical examination
• First year of a recognized degree course with PCB
• B.Sc. examination with PCB subjects

The following candidates are not eligible:
• Candidates who passed qualifying examination in multiple attempts
• Candidates with compartment exams
• Candidates with non-science combinations such as domestic science
• Candidates with incomplete or non-equivalent qualifications
Admission to AFMC is primarily based on the candidate's performance in the national-level medical entrance examination.
• Candidates must qualify NEET UG 2026 conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA)
• NEET score serves as the initial screening criterion for shortlisting
• Qualifying NEET alone does not make a candidate eligible — additional steps are required
In addition to NEET, candidates must:
• Register on the DGHS (Directorate General of Health Services) portal: www.mcc.nic.in
• Complete the application process specifically for AFMC Pune during the prescribed window
• Only candidates who have qualified NEET and registered on DGHS portal will be considered
Admission to AFMC is a two-step process:
• Step 1: Qualify NEET UG 2026
• Step 2: Register and apply through the DGHS (MCC) portal for AFMC
Only candidates who successfully complete both steps will be considered for the subsequent stages.
After registration, candidates are shortlisted based on NEET merit. Approximately 2000 candidates are called for screening:
• 1600 boys
• 400 girls
• Mode: Computer-Based Test
• Questions: 40 MCQs
• Marks: 80
• Duration: 30 minutes
• Negative marking: 0.5 per incorrect answer
Score is combined with NEET score.

Candidates undergo a detailed medical examination. Only those declared medically fit are considered for final selection.
• Written score = (NEET + ToELR) ÷ 4
• Final score = Written score + Interview marks
Separate merit lists are prepared for boys and girls.
• Candidates are commissioned as officers in AFMS
• Minimum service liability: 7 years (Short Service Commission)
• Permanent Commission officers serve until retirement
• Bond Amount: ₹71,00,000
• Signed by parents/guardians at admission
• If a candidate withdraws after 7 days of admission, the bond amount becomes payable
If a cadet is declared NSL due to medical reasons:
• No bond payment required
• Must pay training costs (~₹28,166 per week)
Candidates must register on the DGHS portal: www.mcc.nic.in. This registration is mandatory for all candidates seeking admission to AFMC.
Candidates must appear for and qualify NEET UG 2026 conducted by NTA. The NEET score forms the primary basis for shortlisting candidates for AFMC screening.
Based on NEET performance, approximately 2000 candidates (~1600 boys and 400 girls) are shortlisted. The list and screening schedule are published on official AFMC websites.
Shortlisted candidates report to AFMC Pune for:
• Test of English Language and Reasoning (ToELR)
• Psychological Assessment Test (PAT)
• Personal Interview
• Medical Examination
Based on NEET UG 2026 + ToELR + Interview, a final merit list is prepared. Separate merit lists for boys and girls. A waitlist is also released.
Candidates must produce originals including:
• NEET UG 2026 Admit Card and Scorecard
• Class 12 mark sheet and pass certificate
• Proof of date of birth
• NCC/Sports certificates (if applicable)
Any discrepancy, false information, or missing documents will lead to cancellation of candidature.
Candidates are offered admission strictly based on merit position. Waitlisted candidates may be called in phases to fill vacant seats. Failure to report within the specified time will result in forfeiture of the seat.
AFMC Pune is a fully residential institution where all selected candidates are required to live within the campus. Campus life combines academic training, military discipline, physical fitness, and co-curricular development.

Discipline forms the foundation of training at AFMC. Strict discipline is enforced throughout the duration of the course, and adherence to institutional rules is mandatory.
Cadets are required to attend all academic lectures, practical sessions, clinical postings, and training activities. Regularity and punctuality are strictly monitored. Failure may result in detention in the term or disciplinary action.
Cadets must be properly dressed at all times as per prescribed norms. Uniform and appearance standards reflect the discipline and identity of the Armed Forces. Any deviation from dress regulations is treated as a breach of discipline.
All cadets are governed by a formal Code of Conduct. Cadets must demonstrate:
• Respect towards faculty and staff
• Proper conduct with fellow cadets
• Responsibility and integrity in all activities
Any breach of rules or misconduct may lead to:
• Warning or penalties
• Detention from academic progression
• Removal from service liability
• Expulsion from the college
Admission to AFMC is subject to strict medical fitness criteria. All candidates undergo a detailed medical examination by authorized Medical Boards, and only those declared medically fit are eligible for admission.
• No major physical deformities or developmental abnormalities
• No chronic diseases affecting cardiovascular, respiratory, or digestive systems
• No history of psychiatric illness, epilepsy, or neurological disorders
• No active infections or long-term medical conditions
• Free from speech defects, skin diseases, genital disorders, hernia, tuberculosis, or chronic lung diseases
• Male candidates: 157 cm minimum
• Female candidates: 152 cm minimum
• Relaxation for hilly and North-Eastern region candidates
• Minimum chest expansion: 5 cm
• Acceptable BMI limits and proper body proportions required
• Corrected visual acuity: 6/6 in both eyes
• Acceptable limits for myopia and hypermetropia
• No squint or other eye abnormalities
• Healthy retina, no history of serious eye disorders
• LASIK surgery permitted only under specified conditions
Hearing:
• Must hear a forced whisper from 610 cm with each ear
• No ear disorders, discharge, or structural abnormalities
Dental:
• Minimum 14 dental points required
• Free from severe dental caries and gum diseases (pyorrhoea)
Comprehensive evaluation includes:
• Clinical examination by Medical Board
• X-ray examination (lungs and chest)
• Ultrasound (USG) of abdomen
• Laboratory investigations (blood, urine tests)
• Vision and hearing assessment
• Physical fitness evaluation
• For female candidates: gynecological and ultrasound examination
• Candidates are categorized strictly as Fit or Unfit
• No provision for temporary unfitness
• Candidates may apply for an Appeal Medical Board — decision is final

Successful completion of the MBBS course at AFMC opens the pathway to a distinguished career in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). AFMC cadets are commissioned as officers and serve as part of the defence healthcare system.
After completing MBBS and internship, cadets are commissioned in:
• Indian Army
• Indian Navy
• Indian Air Force
• SSC officers: minimum 7 years service
• PC officers: serve until superannuation
• Lieutenant — On commissioning after MBBS
• Captain — After internship completion
• Major — After ~4 years as Captain
• Lt. Colonel — After ~7 years as Major
