About the College

Amrita School of Dentistry, Kochi, is a private dental college that began in September 2003 and is a constituent school of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Deemed to be University). It's housed within the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) campus in Edappally, Ernakulam, in a self-contained four-storey building that's counted among the largest dental college buildings in Asia.

The college is recognised by the Dental Council of India and holds NAAC A++ accreditation. Since it's a deemed university, BDS admission doesn't go through Kerala state counselling - it goes through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), the central body that handles admissions for deemed universities across India, under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Seat Reduction Alert: The Government of India, vide letter No. V.12025/34/2024-DE(pt) dated 09.07.2024, reduced the BDS intake at Amrita School of Dentistry from 60 to 50 seats starting AY 2024-25. If you're comparing against older data online, the seat count has genuinely gone down.

Why Choose Amrita School of Dentistry?

Reputation & Rankings

Consistently placed in NIRF's dental college rankings (top 15โ€“20 nationally in recent years), with an NAAC A++ grade for the parent university.

Infrastructure

A 154,000 sq. ft. self-contained building with pre-clinical labs, lecture halls, research labs, a specialist care clinic, and a full library - one of the larger dedicated dental college buildings in the country.

Clinical Exposure

Attached to the Amrita School of Medicine and AIMS hospital campus, giving students access to a large, active hospital network for clinical training.

Research & Specialties

Runs MDS programmes across all nine dental specialties - the first dental school in Kerala to do so - exposing BDS students to specialist faculty and advanced procedures.

Community Work

Regular free dental health camps for rural communities and schoolchildren - worth knowing if public health dentistry interests you.

After BDS

Graduates typically move into private practice, hospital roles, further studies (MDS), teaching, research, or public health work, in India and abroad.

Eligibility Criteria for BDS

  • Passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as compulsory subjects
  • General category candidates typically need at least 50โ€“60% aggregate in PCB (verify the exact current requirement, as some sources cite a higher threshold for this college)
  • Must have qualified NEET-UG, conducted by NTA
  • Should be at least 17 years old by December 31 of the admission year
  • NRI category applicants need to meet the NRI eligibility norms laid down by the Supreme Court/MCC guidelines, along with required sponsorship documentation

Note: The minimum age rule has seen legal changes in recent years, so it's worth checking the latest NDC/DCI notification.

NRI category candidates go through a separate NRI portal process, with documentation mailed directly for verification.

Course Duration & Fee Structure

Course Duration

BDS at Amrita runs for five years:

  • Four years of academic and clinical study
  • One year of Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI)

Fee Structure

Annual tuition fee is around โ‚น3,50,000 for UR category and $6,000 for NRI category. Total course fees (hostel, mess, and other charges included) tend to run higher - some estimates put the all-inclusive annual cost closer to โ‚น5,00,000 for domestic students.
