GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) 2026
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 is a national-level examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Ministry of Education, Government of India. The organizing institute for GATE 2026 is the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG).
GATE evaluates candidates’ comprehensive understanding of undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering, Technology, Architecture and both undergraduate and postgraduate level subjects in Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanities.

GATE 2026 Test Papers & Syllabus
GATE 2026 will be conducted for 30 test papers. Candidates can appear in either one or up to two test papers as per the approved two-paper combinations.
The test papers will be conducted in English. Each paper carries a total of 100 marks, which includes:
- General Aptitude (GA): 15 marks (common for all papers)
- Subject-Specific Section: 85 marks
Candidates must carefully note the paper code, as it is required during both application submission and the examination.

Important Instructions
- Candidates must familiarize themselves with the correct paper code before applying.
- Each candidate must submit only one application form.
- Candidates wishing to appear in a second paper must add the second paper within the same application as per allowed combinations.
- If multiple applications are submitted, only one application will be accepted and the remaining applications will be rejected without refund of the application fee.

GATE 2026 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates are advised to carefully check the eligibility requirements before applying for GATE 2026. Any candidate fulfilling the prescribed criteria is eligible to appear for the examination.
Basic EligibilityCandidates are eligible to apply for GATE 2026 if they meet any of the following conditions:
- Candidates currently studying in the 3rd or higher year of any undergraduate degree program are eligible to apply.
- Candidates who have completed any government-approved degree program in the following disciplines are also eligible:

Eligibility for Candidates from Foreign CountriesCandidates who have obtained or are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries outside India must meet the following conditions:
- Must be currently in the 3rd or higher year, OR
- Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree of at least three years duration

Professional Societies / InstitutionsThe following professional societies conduct examinations in various engineering fields:
- The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
- The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
- The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
- The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
- The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChE)
- The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
- The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE)
Candidates possessing certification from such professional societies must ensure that the examinations are approved by MoE / AICTE / UGC / UPSC as equivalent to B.E., B.Tech., B.Arch., B.Planning or similar degrees.
Important Notes- Candidates pursuing or holding a higher degree than those listed are also eligible to appear for GATE 2026.
- Candidates with B.Sc., B.A. or B.Com. (3-year programs) are eligible if they wish to seek admission to Master’s programs in IITs and IISc.

Professional Society Examinations
Candidates holding qualifications equivalent to B.E., B.Tech. or B.Arch. through professional societies are eligible if:
- The qualification is recognized by MoE, UPSC or AICTE
- The candidate has completed Section A or equivalent stage of the course
Recognition of Professional Body QualificationsStudents enrolled with professional bodies and institutions as per MHRD OM (No. 11- 15/2011-AR (TS.II)) with permanent recognition up to May 31, 2013 remain recognized.
