IIIT Bhubaneswar
A Practical Guide for Odisha Category Applicants
Compiled from the Official IIIT Bhubaneswar Admission Brochure 2026
The International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bhubaneswar was set up by the Government of Odisha in 2006 to give the state a serious, focused institute for IT education. On 20th January 2014, the Government of Odisha converted it into a full-fledged unitary university, which is the status it holds today.
The campus sits on 34 acres and is fully residential, with separate hostels for boys and girls, modern labs, smart classrooms, and a library subscribing to IEEE, ACM, Springer and Elsevier. Placements have been strong - the institute reports that every eligible student found a job through campus placement in the last academic year.
This guide focuses on B.Tech admission through the Odisha category, as covered in the institute's own 2026 brochure. IIIT Bhubaneswar also runs M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes, but those follow a separate admission process not covered here - check the institute website directly for those.
| Particular | Details |
|---|---|

| Founded | 2006 (converted to a unitary university on 20 January 2014) |

| Admission Session | 2026–27 |

| Document Verification (Odisha Category) | Round-wise, after each provisional seat allotment |
| Round-wise Provisional Seat Allotment | In line with the JoSAA / CSAB 2026 schedule |
Important: No extended deadline has been announced for the Odisha category. If you've seen a date like "17 June 2026" floating around, treat it as unverified until the official website confirms it. The institute is explicit that these dates can change — always cross-check on the admission website before planning around a deadline.
Fifty percent of total seats are reserved for the Odisha State Category (shown below); the remaining fifty percent ("Open to All"/OTA) are filled through JoSAA/CSAB counselling.
| Branch | Seats under Odisha (S) Category |
|---|---|
| Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) | 113 |
| Information Technology (IT) | 38 |
| Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETC) | 38 |
| Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) | 38 |
Correction: Some unofficial guides list a fifth branch, "Computer Engineering (CE)". That branch does not exist at IIIT Bhubaneswar's B.Tech programme - the institute runs exactly four B.Tech branches: CSE, IT, ETC, EEE.
Cutoffs are useful data, but shouldn't be the only thing deciding your choice list.
The most sought-after branch on campus. Covers software development, AI/ML, cybersecurity, cloud computing and full-stack development. Graduates mostly go into software product companies, startups, and research.
Close cousin of CSE with more weight on databases, cloud/DevOps, enterprise applications and IT infrastructure. Good fit for software roles with a systems/ops flavour rather than pure algorithms.
Communication systems, VLSI design, embedded systems, IoT, signal processing and wireless tech. Opens doors into electronics, telecom and semiconductor companies, alongside software roles that value a hardware background.
Electrical machines, power systems, renewable energy, power electronics, industrial automation and EVs. A solid core-engineering branch, with growing overlap into smart grids and electric vehicles.
This is one of the parts most generic admission guides get wrong, because they copy generic JEE Main eligibility instead of what IIIT Bhubaneswar's Odisha category specifically requires:
Note: SC/ST candidates get a 5% relaxation on the marks criteria above.
Reservations under the Odisha category follow Government of Odisha norms and are only available to natives of Odisha (except the OL category). Every reserved-category candidate must produce a nativity certificate from a Tahasildar at document verification.
Correction: There is no OBC-NCL category in this admission process. Odisha's own reservation list above is what applies — don't carry over central-government JEE counselling categories. Any reserved-category seat left unfilled (except EWS and TFW) converts back to the Unreserved pool rather than staying vacant.
Step 1: Pay the Application Fee
Non-refundable fee of ₹1,500 via the eshiksa portal (Union Bank of India). Enter your JEE Main 2026 application number as the "Application ID." Keep the transaction receipt.
Step 2: Apply Online
Fill the form on the institute's admission website using a Gmail account. Only your last submission counts if you submit more than once.
Step 3: Choice Filling
List branch preferences in genuine order of preference — seats are allotted purely by rank and the order listed.
Step 4: Round-wise Seat Allotment
Allotment happens in rounds aligned with JoSAA/CSAB. Multi-category candidates get the best-eligible seat based on their choices.
Step 5: Online Document Verification
Fully online, round-wise, after each allotment. Mandatory documents uploaded at application; category-specific documents at allotment. Single PDF, capped at 100 MB.
Step 6: Seat Acceptance
Pay ₹35,000 seat-acceptance fee (adjusted against 1st semester fee). Email btechconfirm@iiit-bh.ac.in to freeze the seat or stay open for upgrades.
Step 7: Reporting
Final admission completed by reporting at the institute in person, in offline mode, on a separately announced date.
Reminder: Keep checking the admission website and registered email through every round — the institute does not chase candidates individually, and a missed round deadline can cost you the seat.
Keep scanned PDF copies ready. All documents must be merged into a single PDF, named after your JEE Main application number, capped at 100 MB.
Note: There is no OBC-NCL certificate required anywhere in this list — unlike central JEE counselling. A mismatch between claimed and actual documents can cancel your candidature or force a category change (allowed only once).
Institute's own published, per-semester figures. Excludes personal costs like stationery, travel and a laptop.

A ballpark estimate - actual costs depend on hostel type, fee revisions, and lifestyle.

|---|---|
| Academic Fees (tuition, library, exam, registration, etc.) | ₹9.0 – 10.0 Lakh |
| Hostel & Mess Charges | ₹2.5 – 3.0 Lakh |

| Estimated Total | ₹12 – 13 Lakh |
Odisha (S) category students can apply for the following, on top of anything they qualify for through JEE Main / central schemes:
Nationalised and most scheduled commercial banks offer education loans covering tuition, hostel/mess charges, exam fees, books, and sometimes a laptop, subject to the bank's own norms. Banks usually ask for:
