IIIT Bhubaneswar Admission 2026

A Practical Guide for Odisha Category Applicants
Compiled from the Official IIIT Bhubaneswar Admission Brochure 2026

About the Institute

The International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bhubaneswar was set up by the Government of Odisha in 2006 to give the state a serious, focused institute for IT education. On 20th January 2014, the Government of Odisha converted it into a full-fledged unitary university, which is the status it holds today.

The campus sits on 34 acres and is fully residential, with separate hostels for boys and girls, modern labs, smart classrooms, and a library subscribing to IEEE, ACM, Springer and Elsevier. Placements have been strong - the institute reports that every eligible student found a job through campus placement in the last academic year.

This guide focuses on B.Tech admission through the Odisha category, as covered in the institute's own 2026 brochure. IIIT Bhubaneswar also runs M.Tech and Ph.D. programmes, but those follow a separate admission process not covered here - check the institute website directly for those.

Important: No extended deadline has been announced for the Odisha category. If you've seen a date like "17 June 2026" floating around, treat it as unverified until the official website confirms it. The institute is explicit that these dates can change — always cross-check on the admission website before planning around a deadline.

Branches & Seats (Odisha Category)

Fifty percent of total seats are reserved for the Odisha State Category (shown below); the remaining fifty percent ("Open to All"/OTA) are filled through JoSAA/CSAB counselling.

BranchSeats under Odisha (S) Category
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)113
Information Technology (IT)38
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETC)38
Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE)38

Correction: Some unofficial guides list a fifth branch, "Computer Engineering (CE)". That branch does not exist at IIIT Bhubaneswar's B.Tech programme - the institute runs exactly four B.Tech branches: CSE, IT, ETC, EEE.

Which Branch Should You Pick?

Cutoffs are useful data, but shouldn't be the only thing deciding your choice list.

Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)

The most sought-after branch on campus. Covers software development, AI/ML, cybersecurity, cloud computing and full-stack development. Graduates mostly go into software product companies, startups, and research.

Information Technology (IT)

Close cousin of CSE with more weight on databases, cloud/DevOps, enterprise applications and IT infrastructure. Good fit for software roles with a systems/ops flavour rather than pure algorithms.

Electronics & Telecommunication (ETC)

Communication systems, VLSI design, embedded systems, IoT, signal processing and wireless tech. Opens doors into electronics, telecom and semiconductor companies, alongside software roles that value a hardware background.

Electrical & Electronics (EEE)

Electrical machines, power systems, renewable energy, power electronics, industrial automation and EVs. A solid core-engineering branch, with growing overlap into smart grids and electric vehicles.

Eligibility Criteria (Odisha Category)

This is one of the parts most generic admission guides get wrong, because they copy generic JEE Main eligibility instead of what IIIT Bhubaneswar's Odisha category specifically requires:

  • At least 60% aggregate marks (or 6.32 CGPA) in the Class 10 board examination
  • At least 60% aggregate marks in the Class 12 Science stream — calculated as (marks secured ÷ total marks appeared) × 100
  • At least 45% marks in each of Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry individually in Class 12 — not just a combined average
  • A valid JEE Main 2026 All-India Rank (CRL); admission is based purely on this merit list — there is no separate institute-level entrance test

Note: SC/ST candidates get a 5% relaxation on the marks criteria above.

Reservation Categories

Reservations under the Odisha category follow Government of Odisha norms and are only available to natives of Odisha (except the OL category). Every reserved-category candidate must produce a nativity certificate from a Tahasildar at document verification.

  • Unreserved (UR)
  • Scheduled Caste (SC) & Scheduled Tribe (ST) — by birth, not marriage/adoption
  • Economically Weaker Section (EWS)
  • Outlying Odia-speaking tracts (OL)
  • Green Card (GC) holders
  • Physically Challenged (PC) — 40%+ disability
  • Ex-Servicemen (ES) wards
  • Odisha Govt. school/college students (GH)
  • Tuition Fee Waiver (TFW) — family income under ₹8 lakh
  • Women's reservation — 30% in every category except OL & TFW

Correction: There is no OBC-NCL category in this admission process. Odisha's own reservation list above is what applies — don't carry over central-government JEE counselling categories. Any reserved-category seat left unfilled (except EWS and TFW) converts back to the Unreserved pool rather than staying vacant.

Step-by-Step Admission Process

Step 1: Pay the Application Fee

Non-refundable fee of ₹1,500 via the eshiksa portal (Union Bank of India). Enter your JEE Main 2026 application number as the "Application ID." Keep the transaction receipt.

Step 2: Apply Online

Fill the form on the institute's admission website using a Gmail account. Only your last submission counts if you submit more than once.

Step 3: Choice Filling

List branch preferences in genuine order of preference — seats are allotted purely by rank and the order listed.

Step 4: Round-wise Seat Allotment

Allotment happens in rounds aligned with JoSAA/CSAB. Multi-category candidates get the best-eligible seat based on their choices.

Step 5: Online Document Verification

Fully online, round-wise, after each allotment. Mandatory documents uploaded at application; category-specific documents at allotment. Single PDF, capped at 100 MB.

Step 6: Seat Acceptance

Pay ₹35,000 seat-acceptance fee (adjusted against 1st semester fee). Email btechconfirm@iiit-bh.ac.in to freeze the seat or stay open for upgrades.

Step 7: Reporting

Final admission completed by reporting at the institute in person, in offline mode, on a separately announced date.

Reminder: Keep checking the admission website and registered email through every round — the institute does not chase candidates individually, and a missed round deadline can cost you the seat.

Choice-Filling Strategy

  • Put your genuinely most-wanted branch at the top - allotment goes purely by rank and the order you list, not "strategic" ranking
  • Think in terms of the branch you'd be happy studying for four years, not just the branch with the best placement headlines
  • Use last year's closing-rank trends as a rough guide, not a guarantee - cutoffs move year to year
  • Include a realistic mix rather than only your top-choice branch, especially if your rank is borderline
  • Double-check every entry before locking - once the choice-filling window closes, changes generally aren't allowed

Documents You'll Need

Keep scanned PDF copies ready. All documents must be merged into a single PDF, named after your JEE Main application number, capped at 100 MB.

Mandatory at Application Stage

  • Passport-size colour photograph
  • Class 10 mark sheet
  • Class 12 mark sheet
  • JEE Main 2026 CRL rank card
  • Proof of successful application-fee payment

Required at Document Verification (as applicable)

  • Nativity certificate (Odisha) - not earlier than 1 Jan 2026, mandatory for every reserved category
  • SC / ST certificate
  • EWS (income & asset) certificate from Tahasildar - not earlier than 1 April 2026
  • Green Card of parents (Family Welfare Dept., Govt. of Odisha)
  • Disability certificate (not below CDMO rank) - PC category
  • Ex-Serviceman certificate (institute format) - ES category
  • School/college certificates (institute format) - GH category
  • Nativity certificate in prescribed OL format - OL category
  • Income certificate of parents - TFW claims

Note: There is no OBC-NCL certificate required anywhere in this list — unlike central JEE counselling. A mismatch between claimed and actual documents can cancel your candidature or force a category change (allowed only once).

Education Loans & Withdrawal / Refund Policy

Education Loans

Nationalised and most scheduled commercial banks offer education loans covering tuition, hostel/mess charges, exam fees, books, and sometimes a laptop, subject to the bank's own norms. Banks usually ask for:

  • Admission / seat-acceptance letter and fee structure
  • JEE Main 2026 score card
  • Class 10 & 12 mark sheets
  • Identity and address proof
  • Parent/guardian income proof and bank KYC documents

Withdrawal & Refund Policy

Email btechwithdraw@iiit-bh.ac.in with the subject "I want to withdraw from B.Tech. Admission." Refund processing starts in the third week of January 2027, paid via NEFT.

  • Withdraw before the last allotment round: full ₹35,000 refunded minus ₹1,000
  • Withdraw after the last round is published: only the ₹15,000 caution deposit is refunded

A Few Things Worth Remembering

  • Communicate only through the email ID you registered with - that's the address the institute will use for everything important
  • A nativity certificate is mandatory for every reserved category, dated no earlier than 1 January 2026
  • Missing documents or not meeting the eligibility bar cancels your provisional allotment outright - there's no partial credit
  • Any forged or manipulated document, discovered at any stage, can cancel your admission even after it's granted
  • This brochure and its dates apply only to the 2026–2030 batch; the institute may revise fees, seats, or process for future years
