Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI), formerly known simply as Mysore Medical College, is one of the oldest and most prestigious government medical institutions in India. Established in 1924, it holds the distinction of being the first medical college in a native princely state during pre-independence India. Initially founded in Bangalore near Victoria Hospital, it was later relocated to Mysuru in 1930 due to the visionary efforts of H.H. Krishnaraja Wodeyar. MMC&RI has played a historic role in shaping healthcare education in Karnataka—it remained the only medical college in the state until 1952 and was among the first 6–7 such institutions in the country. Over the decades, it has gained global recognition, and its alumni have served in various parts of the world, upholding its legacy of medical excellence.
About the Hospital
Mysore Medical College and Research Institute is associated with multiple hospitals that offer comprehensive healthcare services while providing clinical training to its students. The main teaching hospital is Krishna Rajendra (K.R.) Hospital, a multi-specialty facility offering treatment across a wide range of medical and surgical disciplines. Cheluvamba Hospital serves as a dedicated center for maternal and child healthcare, while the PKTB Hospital specializes in the treatment of tuberculosis and other respiratory illnesses. Together, these hospitals handle a large patient inflow from Mysuru and nearby districts, ensuring rich clinical exposure for undergraduate and postgraduate students alike.
