It was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Naveen Patnaik, to serve the coastal region and the large population of Puri and its adjoining districts. Named after Lord Jagannath, the revered deity of Odisha, the college is set up to offer state-of-the-art education and healthcare services. It is affiliated with the Odisha University of Health Sciences and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC), with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students. The institution symbolizes a significant step forward in decentralizing medical education from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to other important regional centers.

About the Hospital

The hospital associated with SJMCH is currently operating from the former District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Puri, which offers multi-specialty healthcare services. A new, fully equipped teaching hospital is under construction beside the main campus to meet NMC norms and will enhance clinical training infrastructure upon completion. The present hospital plays a vital role in treating a large number of patients, especially during major festivals like Rath Yatra, and supports government public health programs for the region.
