Stanley Medical College (SMC) is a prestigious government medical college located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The medical college was formally established on 2 July 1938, although the associated hospital dates back over 200 years, making it one of the oldest medical education centers in India.

The origins of Stanley Medical College trace back to 1740, when the East India Company first established a medical department in Madras. The hospital stands on the historic site of the Monegar Choultry, founded in 1782. In 1799, the Madras Native Infirmary was created, incorporating the Monegar Choultry and a leper asylum.

The Government Stanley Hospital, associated with the college, is a large tertiary care hospital with 1,580 beds. It handles over 5,000 outpatient visits daily and is equipped with an 8-storey surgical complex capable of conducting 40 surgeries simultaneously. A dedicated pediatric block provides comprehensive child healthcare services under one roof.

The hospital is also home to a Centre of Excellence for Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery and the country’s first cadaver maintenance unit for anatomical study.
