Established in the year 1986 as REC Hamirpur, NIT Hamirpur has been declared as an Institute of National Importance under the Act of Parliament, 2007. The Institute enjoys complete autonomy in academic affairs and is managed by an autonomous Board of Governors consisting of nominees of the Central and State Governments, Industry, and other Educational Institutions/Universities. The Institute has been fully financed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, since April 2003.
