Odisha Private Medical Colleges Announce 75% MBBS Fee Hike for 2025

Off late there has been much hullabaloo over the new scene in medical education in Odisha, India among the students, parents and the teachers. The state government in its latest notification has changed the tail types for MBBS and (PG) courses in private medical colleges, which has resulted in the fee structure of the medical colleges to go through the ceiling now.

The recasting of fees illustrates the fluidity of Indian educational policy and its regulatory structures, such as the 2007 Act, in shaping educational pathways. “You may also contact the OJEE Authority or the concerned committee for better understanding of such issues during 2025-26 as student/parent,” the order read.

New Fee Structure: What’s Changing?

Three private colleges in Odisha are at the forefront of this fee revision, impacting both MBBS and PG students. Here’s the breakdown:

Why the Hike? Behind the Policy

The fee hikes are a result of a systematised regulatory mechanism which had been put in place by enacting the Odisha Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission & Fixation of Fee) Act, 2007. Here’s why:

  1. Fees committee: The committee met on December 10, 2023 and on October 30, 2024 to review institutional charges and recommend revisions.
  2. Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) Authority: Revised fee structure introduced to maintain transparency and to bring transparency in getting admissions in the colleges.
  3. Department of Skill Development and Vocational Education: Released the official notice citing increase in operational cost including infrastructure and faculty cost.

This action is meant to help to the line of quality education and financial viability for private colleges, but it’s raised access concerns.

Impact on Students: A Growing Financial Burden

The fee hike would make private medical education in Odisha more expensive and influence students’ preference while choosing their own state. Here is how it affects the doctors of tomorrow:

Higher Fees: MBBS fees are now Rs 8.5–11.5 lakh/year, a huge jump for middle income families.

Parental Backlash: The Odisha Parents' Federation are up in arms against the hike, stating that the increase impedes economically weaker students from securing a higher education, reported The Daily Jagran.

Change in Tastes: If students consider government colleges or overseas (such as Nepal, with 29 NMC recognized colleges) where they can find reasonable cost.

Insight: Odisha, which used to be an affordable destination for medical studies, would lose its competitive advantage unless scholarships or assistance programs were stepped up.

What’s Next? Plan Your Medical Journey

As the school year of 2025-2026 draws near, students should plan their moves accordingly. Here’s how to stay ahead:

Check Updates: Keep track of the OJEE or college sites for final fee details, particularly of DRIEMS Medical College.

Look at Other Options: Government colleges or international programmes with lesser fees.

Ask for Advice: Consult with professionals to learn about sources of funding or procedures.

Looking Ahead!

Since shifting through these changes, Odisha would have the stakeholders of medical education watching to see how the reduced fees impact student intake, and consequently institutional expansion.

While the effect might be to force the fees to the level of notching up institutional cost, the impact on future doctors cannot be ignored. Medical education in Odisha, which was considered to be less expensive than in other states, will become even costlier for students. This may discourage middle-income students to attend medical school, reducing access to good training and increasing disparities in the health professions.
