In the Philippine education system, higher education is administered by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). In a historic announcement, CHED officially recognized that the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) programs of the Philippines meet the eligibility criteria established by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India. This fundamental change eliminates a lengthy period of uncertainty and clears a very safe pathway to return to India and legally practice medicine in the future after completing a degree in the Philippines.

This confirmation was made through a formal letter from CHED to the Embassy of India in Manila. The advisory confirms that Indian students graduating from a CHED-authorized accredited medical institution in the Philippines are now eligible to take the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) and the upcoming National Exit Test (NExT) exams in India.

Philippine MD Curriculum Now Matches Indian Standards

CHED has determined that the M.D. program meets all academic and clinical requirements set forth in NMC's Schedule I (Gazette Notification dated November 18, 2021). Main highlights of this partnership are:

•  54 months (4.5 years) M.D. program, not including the undergraduate course in pre-medical

•  English is the medium of instruction

•  All the subjects required by NMC are covered

•  One year of clinical internship at the same University or a hospital that is an affiliate of the University

•  The degree is legally valid and registrable in the Philippines

Student Reactions: Relief and Renewed Focus

Aditya Dharmendar Bulbule, a 3rd year student at Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF) expressed his relief at the announcement: “The confirmation alleviated the worries I had about the recognition of my degree in India. It helps me devote all my time to my studies and readiness for the FMGE or NExT.”

He said he had investigated medical schools in Ukraine and Georgia but felt the Philippines was a more appealing option due to the cost, English language instruction and class distribution of disease similar to India. "Filling in DMSF through Transworld, Dr David Pillai made everything easy. He took care of everything from food to lodging and great academic support," he said.

Dr. Pankaj Anil Kokate, also a DMSF graduate preparing for his FMGE, echoed Bulbule's sentiments. "The confirmation also assures that our medical training is on par with one of Indian standards. It is nice to know we will be able to serve our communities and that our hard work and training are recognised."

Emphasizing DMSF's impeccable FMGE performance, he added, "One element is the college passing rate - consistently higher than 85%. That was a big part of my choice to come to study here."

Rohit Nair, MD graduate of Bicol Christian College of Medicine, felt a sense of relief, saying, "There was always the apprehension that our hard work would go to waste. Now with the news CHED certified the curriculum has COR in alignment with NMC, I can feel good about preparing for FMGE without constantly shaking my confidence on my qualification."

An Announcement From Transworld Educare

Kadwin Pillai, Managing Director, Transworld Educare and Director, Kings International Medical Academy, commented on the announcement saying, "This official alignment is a great sign of quality of Philippine medical education. It has prepared Indian students to not only take licensure exams, but pursue medical careers around the world."

Recommendations for Future Aspiring Students

The Embassy of India has issued several recommendations for students wanting to take an M.D, in the Philippines:

•  Verify that your pre-medical (Bachelors') is CHED-accredited and follows the necessary course framework

•  Pass the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) prior to starting the M.D.

•  Check the latest advisories from CHED and the NMC prior to starting

•  Always make tuition payments directly to universities with the valid receipt

•  Apostille your final degree and academic documents from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs for validity in India

This official recognition represents a milestone for the more than 2,000 Indian students who undertake a journey to the Philippines to realize their dream of becoming a doctor every year. Now with clarity in place, students can feel optimistic and secure as they look toward their future in medicine.
