Strengthening JEE Governance: Education Ministry’s New Apex Board for 2026-27

The Ministry of Education has announced an important administrative change that affects the process of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is crucial in admitting your child to the best engineering institutions like IITs, NITs and other centrally funded technical institutes. In 2026 and 2027, the Department of Higher Education reconstituted the JEE Apex Board (JAB). The rationale of this change is the smooth running of JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). We have provided an in-depth description of this development, its implications, and recommendations to help your child prepare below.

Summary of the JEE Apex Board Reconstitution

At the end of the term of the previous JAB, the reconstitution is done to uphold the integrity and efficiency of the JEE process. The new JAB will be the ultimate arbiter on the policies, rules, and regulations of JEE (Main) whilst liaising with the organising institute for JEE (Advanced). Professor S. K. Jain, former Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, was made the honorary chairperson of the board.

The membership consists of directors of such prestigious institutions as IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, NIT Rourkela, IIEST Shibpur, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT (PPP) Una, and IIITDM Kancheepuram. Also present will be representatives of the state governments of Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, as well as nominees of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), National Informatics Centre (NIC), Centre of Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the Ministry of Education. The member secretary will be the Director General of the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The National Testing Agency

The NTA has remained decisive in offering administrative and logistical assistance to JEE (Main). This also incorporates the maintenance of IT-related activities like online application submission and pre and post examination services. The JAB will have a permanent secretariat, which will be located within the NTA, and use the available infrastructure and financial resources built over the years since the foundation of the board. Other posts, such as that of an executive director, might be established at any time, also at the discretion of the Cabinet or any other Central Establishment Expenditure.

Advice to JEE Aspirants

This reconstitution underlines the government's intention to simplify the JEE process so that admissions to the finest engineering schools are transparent and efficient. The wide composition of the JAB, which includes both academic leaders and state officials, is also meant to balance policy-making and practical execution. This would provide students with a stable and well-coordinated examination process in 2026 and 2027 with the continuation of the NTA to facilitate the smooth running of JEE (Main). The parents will have a predictable policy and clear rules, and their child will be limited to a few interruptions in their preparation and application process.

Guidance for Parents

To help your child at this stage:

  • Visit the official NTA site frequently to get information about the schedules, application procedures and guidelines of JEE (Main).
  • You should make your child concentrate on his or her preparation because the reconstituted JAB tries to ensure a healthy and impartial examination process.
  • Use authentic materials, including the Ministry of Education announcements or NTA announcements, to keep up with any changes in policies or exams.
  • Talk to your child about why it matters to follow the application deadlines and plan well before JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced).

This administrative change is a reflection of the commitment of the Ministry to improve the JEE system so that your child has a chance to study engineering in the best institutions in India. Being in the know and being proactive can help you lead your child on a successful academic path.
