Why Were MBBS Seats Increased in 2026-27?
The significant increase in MBBS seats for the Academic Year 2026-27 is the result of a special decision taken by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) under the National Medical Commission.
For this academic session, MARB temporarily relaxed certain provisions of the UG Medical Education Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR), 2023. Earlier, these regulations limited the maximum MBBS intake to 150 seats per medical college and linked seat approvals with state population norms.
With this one-time relaxation, many existing medical colleges became eligible to increase their annual intake capacity, while several new medical colleges also received approval. As a result, India recorded one of the biggest annual increases in MBBS seats in recent years.
📢 Official Update: The increase in MBBS seats is based on a one-time relaxation of the UG Medical Education MSR, 2023, allowing eligible medical colleges to expand their approved intake capacity for the 2026-27 academic session.
