Nagaland has only one medical college offering MBBS:

This is the only MBBS college located within the State of Nagaland.

  • Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Government of Nagaland

📜 Nagaland MBBS Reservation & Selection Policy

(As per Government of Nagaland – Higher & Technical Education Department Notification dated 9th September 2021, modifying Notification dated 30th May 2016)


This policy governs selection to State Reserved Seats under Central Seat Allotment for Undergraduate Professional Courses including MBBS.

📋 1. Eligibility Categories

Category I

  • Members of recognized Indigenous Scheduled Tribes of Nagaland, as notified by the Government from time to time.

Category II

  • Members of recognized Backward Tribes of Nagaland, as notified by the Government from time to time.

Category III

  • (a) Candidates belonging to the non-local Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland as per P & AR Department Notification No. AR-8/8/76 dated 28th April 1977.
  • (b) Children of:
    • Non-Local State Government employees
    • Children of All India Service Officers borne on Nagaland Cadre

To be eligible under Category III(b):

  • The candidate must have appeared/passed Class X/XII or equivalent from a school within Nagaland.
  • Parent(s) must have been residing and posted in Nagaland for at least three years or more.
  • Both conditions must be fulfilled.

Category IV – Dropout Disqualification Rule

Any candidate who:

  • Drops out, or
  • Declines after accepting a seat

Shall be disqualified from selection against State Quota in the subsequent year.

However, if the candidate forfeits the seat and the seat is filled by a replacement, the candidate shall not be disqualified.

🏛 2. Reservation Structure

The State Reserved Seats for Undergraduate Technical & Professional Courses (including MBBS) are reserved for candidates belonging to Indigenous Scheduled Tribes of Nagaland as follows:

(a) Backward Tribe Reservation – 15%

  • 15% of total seats per course are reserved for candidates under Category II (Backward Tribes).
  • Not more than one seat per tribe per course shall be allotted in a single year out of the 15% reserved seats.

(b) Person with Disability (PWD) Reservation – 5%

  • 5% of total seats per course are reserved for candidates belonging to Indigenous Scheduled Tribes of Nagaland with disability.
  • Applicable for:
    • Locomotor disability of lower limbs
    • Disability between 40% and 70%
  • Candidates must produce a Disability Certificate from the State Disability Assessment Board.

(c) Filling of Remaining Seats

  • Remaining seats shall be filled among candidates belonging to Indigenous Scheduled Tribes of Nagaland who secure minimum qualifying marks in the entrance examination.
  • This includes candidates belonging to Backward Tribes.
  • Selection shall be based on merit and preference / option exercised by candidates.

(d) Rounding & Seat Calculation

  • Reservation seats shall be calculated by rounding off to the nearest whole number.
  • Total seat count must not be exceeded.
  • If rounding causes excess allocation, preference shall be given in the following order:
    1. PWD
    2. Backward Tribe
    3. Indigenous Scheduled Tribes of Nagaland

(e) NEC Seats

  • NEC seats allotted for the State of Nagaland are reserved exclusively for recognized Indigenous Scheduled Tribes of Nagaland.

🎯 3. Selection Process

(a) Mode of Selection

Selection shall be through entrance examinations conducted by:

  • State Government
  • Central Government
  • Or other agency as notified by the State Government

(For MBBS, this refers to NEET-UG as the qualifying entrance examination.)

(b) Minimum Qualifying Marks

  • Only candidates securing the required minimum qualifying marks in the entrance examination shall be considered for selection.

(c) Basis of Allotment

Selection shall be based on:

  • Order of merit
  • Preference / option exercised
  • Availability of seats

Separate merit lists shall be maintained for all categories.

(d) De-reservation Rule (Backward Tribe)

If qualified candidates under Backward Tribe reservation are not available:

  • Unfilled seats shall be de-reserved
  • Such seats shall be allotted to Category I candidates
  • Merit shall be maintained

(e) Selection Under Category III (If Seats Remain)

If seats remain after selecting all eligible Indigenous Scheduled Tribe candidates, Category III candidates shall be considered in the following order of preference:

  1. Non-local indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland
  2. Children of non-local State Government employees
  3. Children of All India Service Officers borne on Nagaland Cadre
