Patna Medical College's Rs 5,000-Crore Facelift: Increased Capacity, New College, and Heliport
Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) is undergoing a massive Rs 5,544-crore redevelopment project that will transform it into the world’s second-largest hospital by capacity, with 5,462 beds. Originally approved by the Bihar cabinet in 2018, this ambitious project will introduce state-of-the-art facilities, including a new medical college, a heliport, and expanded hospital infrastructure.
A key feature of the redevelopment is the addition of a new medical college with a capacity for 250 annual admissions. Residential facilities for 644 faculty members, along with 1,150 new beds, are also part of the expansion. The project is being executed in phases, with the first phase focusing on the construction of four towers, two of which are nearing completion. Once Larsen & Toubro (L&T) hands over the buildings, operations will commence immediately.
According to Dr. Indrashekhar Thakur, medical superintendent at PMCH, the first phase includes 1,150 beds, comprising 500 emergency beds, 500 ICU beds, 136 private rooms, 10 deluxe rooms, and two VIP suites. Additionally, 27 modular operation theatres and a helipad will be operational soon, enhancing emergency medical services.
The first phase will also house several OPD departments, such as medicine, cardiology, dentistry, ophthalmology, obstetrics, and gynaecology. Departments including paediatrics, dermatology, and venereal diseases will be relocated to the newly developed towers, optimizing patient care.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated several key components of the project on February 27 last year, including multi-level car parking, central utility buildings, nurses’ and girls’ hostels, and the foundation stone for the Power Grid. The redevelopment will cover an extensive 78 lakh square feet of built-up area, accommodating 1,745 car parking spaces and an 1,800-seat auditorium.
Furthermore, a new G+7 Super-Specialty Department is under construction, adding 200 beds for specialized fields such as Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Neurology, Haematology, Neurosurgery, Neonatology, and Urology. Hostel facilities are also being upgraded, with accommodations for 550 nurses and 1,620 students now ready for occupancy.
This redevelopment is a significant step toward modernizing healthcare infrastructure in Bihar, elevating PMCH into a world-class medical institution with advanced healthcare services and improved patient facilities.
