NEET UG to Move to CBT Soon: NTA DG Abhishek Singh Gives Major Update

NEET UG is set to move towards the Computer-Based Test (CBT) format soon, according to National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Abhishek Singh. The latest statement has renewed discussion around a possible change in the way one of India's biggest medical entrance examinations is conducted.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Singh said that while most major NTA examinations are already conducted in CBT mode, NEET remains the major exception. He indicated that the agency is now working towards moving NEET to CBT as well.

NEET UG to Shift From Pen-and-Paper to CBT

At present, NEET UG is conducted in the traditional pen-and-paper format. According to Abhishek Singh, this is expected to change as NTA moves towards a fully computer-based examination system.

He said that examinations such as JEE, UGC NET, CUET and NIFT are already conducted through CBT, while NEET is currently the exception. The NTA DG stated that CBT is the future direction for the agency's examinations and that NEET will also move to the format soon.

NTA Focusing on CBT Infrastructure and Security

Moving NEET UG to CBT will require significant expansion of examination infrastructure because of the very large number of candidates appearing for the medical entrance test.

Singh said NTA is working on strengthening its testing infrastructure and building safeguards required for conducting examinations through CBT. The agency is also looking at technology-based measures to make examinations more secure and reduce the possibility of malpractice.

AI and Facial Authentication to Strengthen Exam Security

The NTA DG also highlighted the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, biometric verification and Aadhaar-based face authentication in examinations.

According to Singh, NTA is exploring AI not only for testing but also for fraud prevention, including analysing examination logs, data and other information to identify irregularities. Aadhaar-based and facial authentication systems are already being used across several NTA examinations to strengthen candidate verification.

Is the NEET UG 2027 Exam Pattern Final?

The latest statement confirms the direction towards CBT, but candidates should not assume that the complete NEET UG 2027 examination pattern has already been finalised.

Details such as the exact number of questions, examination duration, number of shifts, marking scheme and the final implementation framework will need to be officially notified by the concerned authorities.

Therefore, students should currently treat the CBT transition as the major development while waiting for the official NEET UG information bulletin for the complete pattern.

What Does the CBT Shift Mean for NEET Aspirants?

A transition to CBT could change the examination experience for students who have so far prepared primarily for an OMR-based test.

Students preparing for future NEET attempts can gradually become familiar with:

  • Computer-based mock tests
  • Reading questions on a screen
  • On-screen navigation
  • Reviewing and changing answers digitally
  • Time management in a computer-based environment
  • Solving Physics numericals on screen

However, the core preparation strategy should continue to focus on NCERT, concepts, question practice and regular mock tests until NTA announces the detailed examination pattern.

Key Takeaway

The latest statement from NTA Director General Abhishek Singh indicates that NEET UG will move to CBT soon, marking a potential major change in the country's medical entrance examination system.

While the transition is being planned alongside infrastructure and security upgrades, the final detailed NEET UG CBT pattern is still awaited. Candidates should therefore avoid relying on unofficial claims about the exact number of questions, duration or marking scheme until NTA releases an official notification.
