According to the comparison, Government medical colleges account for the highest share of additional seats, followed by Private medical colleges and Deemed Universities.
The updated seat matrix is important for candidates participating in NEET PG 2026 counselling, as the increase in seats may provide more admission opportunities across different states and medical specialisations.

Government vs Private vs Deemed Universities: NEET PG 2026 Seat Comparison
One of the major highlights of the updated NMC seat matrix is the increase in postgraduate medical seats across all three categories of medical institutions.
Government medical colleges have recorded the highest number of additional seats, with 4,502 seats. Private medical colleges have added 3,993 seats, while Deemed Universities have contributed another 1,241 seats.
The category-wise comparison is given below:
| College Category | Additional Seats | Share of Total |
|---|---|---|
| Government Medical Colleges | 4,502 | 46.3% |
| Private Medical Colleges | 3,993 | 41.0% |
| Deemed Universities | 1,241 | 12.7% |
| Total | 9,736 | 100% |
1. Government Medical Colleges
Government medical colleges account for the largest share of additional NEET PG seats in the updated matrix.
A total of 4,502 additional seats have been recorded in Government institutions. This represents approximately 46.3% of all additional seats.
The increase in Government medical colleges is important for NEET PG aspirants because these institutions generally offer comparatively lower tuition fees than Private and Deemed medical colleges.
The addition of seats across different MD and MS specialisations may provide more opportunities for candidates seeking postgraduate medical admission through Government quota counselling.
2. Private Medical Colleges
Private medical colleges have recorded an addition of 3,993 postgraduate medical seats.
This accounts for approximately 41% of the total additional seats.
The increase indicates a significant expansion of postgraduate medical education capacity in the private sector. Several existing colleges have increased their intake, while newly introduced courses have also contributed to the overall growth.
Candidates considering Private medical colleges should carefully compare tuition fees, stipend, bond conditions, infrastructure and clinical exposure before selecting an institution during counselling.
3. Deemed Universities
Deemed Universities have added 1,241 seats to the NEET PG 2026–27 seat matrix.
This represents approximately 12.7% of the total additional seats.
One of the important additions in this category is Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences, Uttarakhand, which has been included in the updated matrix with 72 seats across 19 broad-speciality course entries.
The addition of seats in Deemed Universities is particularly relevant for candidates exploring deemed-university counselling options. However, candidates should carefully check the course-wise fee structure and other admission conditions before making their choices.

Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences Added to the Updated Seat Matrix
Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences, Uttarakhand, is among the notable institutions included in the November 6 updated NMC seat matrix.
The institution is listed under the Deemed University category with 72 postgraduate medical seats across 19 broad-speciality course entries.
Its inclusion adds another option for candidates considering Deemed University medical colleges during NEET PG 2026 counselling.
Candidates should check the individual course-wise seat availability, fee structure and applicable counselling requirements before making their choices.
What Does the Increase in NEET PG Seats Mean for Candidates?
The addition of 9,736 seats is a significant development for candidates appearing in NEET PG 2026 counselling.
The increase in Government, Private and Deemed medical colleges may provide candidates with more options while preparing their choice-filling strategies.
However, the increase in seats does not necessarily mean that cut-offs will decrease across all colleges and specialisations. Cut-offs depend on several factors, including candidate preferences, NEET PG rank, category, seat availability, college reputation and counselling participation.
Candidates should also remember that admission to Government, Private and Deemed institutions may involve different fee structures and counselling procedures.
Therefore, candidates should compare colleges carefully before locking their choices.
Important Note on the NMC Seat Matrix
This comparison is based on the NMC PG Broad Speciality seat matrices dated September 29, 2026, and November 6, 2026.
The analysis includes Government, Private and Deemed medical colleges and covers newly introduced courses, increased intake in existing courses, and seats reduced or removed from the updated matrix.
As per the November 6 NMC notice, the additional Super Speciality seats will be published in a subsequent update. Therefore, the figures mentioned in this article are restricted to Broad Speciality postgraduate medical courses.
Candidates are advised to check the latest official NMC notices and counselling updates before making admission decisions.
