Established in 1921, Harcourt Butler Technical University has consistently remained a paragon and source of inspiration in the field of science and technology. As per Act No. 11 of 2016 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the institute was upgraded to a State University and is now known as Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur, effective 01 September 2016.

Academic Eligibility
A candidate must have clearly passed the Intermediate (10+2) qualifying examination from the U.P. Board or its equivalent from any other recognized Board/University.
The candidate must have studied a minimum of five subjects in 10+2, with:
- Mathematics as a compulsory subject
- Physics as a compulsory subject
- One subject from Chemistry or Computer Science
The candidate must obtain at least:
- 55% marks in aggregate in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Computer Science (for General category candidates)
- 50% marks in aggregate in the same three subjects (for SC / ST / OBC-NCL / Persons with Disability candidates)
If the qualifying Board awards grades instead of percentages, the candidate must obtain and submit an equivalent percentage conversion certificate.
Additionally, all other eligibility conditions applicable for appearing in JEE (Mains)-2024 or CUET (UG)-2024 must also be satisfied.
Domicile Requirement
A candidate who has passed 10+2 from an institution located in Uttar Pradesh is eligible for counselling.
A candidate who has passed the qualifying examination from outside Uttar Pradesh is also eligible provided that either parent (Mother or Father) is a Permanent Resident of Uttar Pradesh. In such cases, the candidate must submit a Permanent Residence Certificate of the parent issued on or after 01.04.2024 (Certificate No. 03).
The domicile requirement is relaxed for:
- Wards of Defence Personnel settled in Uttar Pradesh on the date of JEE (Mains)-2024 / CUET (UG)-2024, or posted in Uttar Pradesh on the date of examination. Certificate No. 5 is required.
- Officers/Employees of All India Services belonging to Uttar Pradesh Cadre. Certificate No. 10 is required.
🪑Reservation of Seats
Vertical reservation is applicable as follows:
- Scheduled Caste – 21%
- Scheduled Tribe – 2%
- Other Backward Classes (NCL) – 27%
Horizontal reservation (within vertical categories) includes:
- Dependents of Freedom Fighters – 2%
- Sons/Daughters of Defence Personnel (Retired/Killed/Disabled) – 5%
- Physically Handicapped – 5%
- Girls – 20%
A candidate can claim only one horizontal reservation among FF / AF / PH.
However, girl candidates may claim GL along with one of FF / AF / PH.
EWS reservation is applicable for candidates not covered under SC/ST/OBC reservation.
Income certificate (Certificate No. 12) issued after 01.04.2024 by a Government Officer not below the rank of Tehsildar is required.
Outside Uttar Pradesh candidates are eligible only for vertical reservation.
In case of non-availability of candidates in a category, seats may be mutually converted.
📊 CUET (UG) Rank Calculation
Rank 1 is assigned to the candidate with the highest normalized score obtained in either:
- Computer Science / Informatics Practices (Subject Code 308)
- Mathematics / Applied Mathematics (Subject Code 319)
Only one subject with highest normalized score is considered. Marks must be entered up to four decimal places.
In case of tie:
- Higher total marks in Mathematics and Physics in 10+2.
- Higher age.

The sanctioned intake is 30 seats.
Seat distribution includes General Open seats (OPNO), Open Girls (OPGL), Open Armed Forces (OPAF), Open Freedom Fighter (OPFF), Open PwD (OPPH), OBC category seats (BCNO, BCGL, BCAF, BCFF, BCPH), SC category seats (SCNO, SCGL, SCAF, SCFF, SCPH), ST category seats (STNO, STGL, STAF, STFF, STPH), and EWS seats.

🔄Refund Policy
In case of withdrawal after submitting Seat Acceptance Fee or Full Academic Fee, 5,000 is deducted as processing fee. Other deductions are as per UGC guidelines.
Refunds are processed only after the last date of admissions for Session 2024-25.
Bank details must be filled carefully. The University is not responsible for refund errors due to incorrect bank information.

Tuition Fee Waiver seats up to maximum 5% of approved intake are available on supernumerary basis.
Under TFW:

Mode of Admission
- Applications for admission to B.Tech. in Biotechnology Program for Session 2024–25 are invited through Online Registration.
- Registration Portal: https://hbtu.admissions.nic.in
- Registration Fee: 2,500 (Non-Refundable)
- Admission is conducted on the basis of merit of Combined University Entrance Test (UG)-2024 [CUET (UG)-2024]

- University will not be responsible for any loss due to lack of communication.
Academic Eligibility
- Candidates must have passed Intermediate (10+2) from U.P. Board or equivalent recognized Board/University with minimum five subjects.
- Compulsory Subjects: Physics and Mathematics or Biology
- Along with one of the following: Chemistry / Biotechnology / Computer Science / Technical Vocational Subject
- Minimum Aggregate Marks: 55% (General), 50% (SC / ST / OBC-NCL / PwD)
- All other eligibility conditions applicable for appearing in CUET (UG)-2024 must be satisfied.
CUET Subject Requirement
- Candidate must qualify in any one of the following CUET (UG)-2024 subject papers:
- Subject Code 304 – Biology / Biological Studies / Biotechnology / Biochemistry
- Subject Code 306 – Chemistry
- Subject Code 319 – Mathematics / Applied Mathematics
- Subject Code 322 – Physics
- If qualified in more than one subject paper, candidate should apply with the better score.
Domicile Requirement
- Candidate passing qualifying examination from institution located in U.P. will be treated as U.P. domicile.
- If passed from outside U.P., Permanent Residence Certificate of parent (issued after 1st April 2024) must be uploaded.
- Eligible under relaxed domicile:
- Defence Personnel settled in U.P.
- Defence Personnel posted in U.P.
- Defence Personnel killed in action
- Wards of Employees of All India Services belonging to U.P. cadre
- Relevant certificates required (Certificate No. 5 / 10 as applicable).
Merit List Preparation (CUET Based)
- Merit list prepared using normalized score in any one of: 304 OR 306 OR 319 OR 322.
- Rank 1 given to candidate with highest normalized score.
- Tie-breaking:
- First: Higher aggregate marks in Physics and Mathematics or Biology in 10+2.
- Second: Older candidate gets higher rank.
