A Brief Cultural Overview of Uzbekistan

A Glimpse into History

Uzbekistan has a long and fascinating history. It was once a key part of the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that connected the East and West. Cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva were major centers for trade, science, and culture. These cities are still known for their beautiful Islamic architecture, historic mosques, and madrasas.

Famous historical figures such as Amir Timur (Tamerlane) and Ulugh Beg were born in this region. Uzbekistan was later part of the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union until it gained independence in 1991.

Climate and Weather

Uzbekistan has a continental climate, which means it has hot summers and cold winters. Summers can be very dry, with temperatures reaching over 40°C (104°F), while winters can drop below -10 °C (14°F), especially in northern areas. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant, making them the best seasons to visit.

Language and Religion

The official language is Uzbek, which is a Turkic language. Russian is also widely spoken, especially in cities and for business or education. In some areas, people speak Tajik, especially in Samarkand and Bukhara. English is becoming more common among the younger generation and in tourism.

Most people in Uzbekistan are Muslim, mainly Sunni Islam, but the country is secular, meaning religion and government are separate. People from other religions, such as Orthodox Christians and Jews, also live peacefully in the country.

Cuisine

Uzbek food is flavorful and hearty, often made with meat, rice, and vegetables. One of the most famous dishes is plov (pilaf), made with rice, carrots, onions, and lamb. Other popular dishes include:

Traditions and Culture

Uzbek culture is a mix of Turkic, Persian, Arab, Russian, and Mongol influences. Family is very important in daily life, and people show great respect to their elders. Traditional clothing includes colorful patterns, such as the ikat style used in dresses and scarves. Music and dance are also a big part of celebrations. Traditional instruments like the dutar and doira are often played, especially during weddings or national holidays. Handicrafts such as ceramics, embroidery, and carpets are well-known and are often handmade using age-old techniques.

About the Samarkand State Medical University

Ninety years ago, in 1930, the foundation of what is now known as Samarkand State Medical University marked a significant milestone in Central Asia. Back then, there were no independent medical universities in the region. By the decision of the Council of People's Commissars of Uzbekistan in 1930, the State Uzbek Medical Institute (GUZMI) was established in Samarkand, laying the groundwork for modern medical education in the area. Over the years, especially after Uzbekistan gained independence, the university experienced significant growth. In 1997, the country introduced the “National Program for Training Personnel,” followed by a healthcare reform plan in 1998. As a result, the Faculty of Higher Nursing was created in 1999. This was followed by the opening of the Faculty of Medical Pedagogy in 2005, and later the faculties of Dentistry, Preventive Medicine, Medical Biology, Pharmacy, and in 2020, the Traditional Medicine program.

The global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had a major impact on all areas of life, especially education. Samarkand State Medical University quickly adapted, shifting to distance learning. Thanks to the electronic learning platform created back in 2013, the transition to online education was smooth. A newer platform was launched in the 2020-2021 academic year, with all materials digitized and made accessible to both students and teachers. The university also expanded international cooperation. It partnered with institutions like the Volga Research Medical University, Chuvash National University (Russia), Ternopil National Medical University (Ukraine), National Louis University (Poland), and Belarusian State Medical University. These partnerships support double-degree programs and postgraduate education. Collaborations with Korea have also enhanced second higher education programs. Since 2020, students from India and other countries have enrolled to study medicine at the university.

From the 2022-2023 academic year, the university gained the right to approve its curricula, define study terms, and decide the language and form of instruction. It can also transfer students from foreign universities, establish distance and evening master's programs, and create research-based structural units. Internal rules such as dress codes can now be determined by the university itself. A Supervisory Board with members from government, university leadership, and the public will oversee the university’s activities. Students and staff will have access to global research databases, and university libraries are being digitized for the “Electronic Library” platform. Reporting processes will move online with help from the World Bank and the Ministry of Higher Education. In addition, universities are now exempt from customs duties on imported educational and scientific equipment until 2024, strengthening their infrastructure and resources. Samarkand State Medical University continues to play a key role in advancing medical education, research, and innovation in Uzbekistan and beyond.

Eligibility Criteria

• Students should be in between the Minimum & maximum. ages of 17 and 25 years. (on or before 31st December of admission year)
  
• The student must have passed class 12th with PCB and English subject from a board recognized by the government of India.
• Students should have secured a minimum of 50% in PCB in 10+2.
• Students should have qualified the NEET Exam as there are no admissions possible in the Samarkand State Medical University without qualifying the NEET Exam for Indian Students.

TRANSPORTATION

If you want to pursue an MBBS in Uzbekistan from Samarkand State Medical University, Uzbekistan, you can follow the following steps-

1. Book a Flight: There are no direct flights available from India to Samarkand, so you have to take connecting flights with layovers in cities like Tashkent or Istanbul. Flights will take from 5 hours to over a day depending upon the time of the layover, from where you are booking your flight, and from which flight you are travelling as not all the flights operate on the daily basis and for some flights there are layovers or stoppage from a few hours to over a day. The total cost of the flight will be around 20-55k INR, depending on the Airline and the booking time.

2. Travel from Tashkent to Samarkand- Upon arriving at Tashkent International Airport, you can book a domestic flight which operates on a daily basis and takes approx. 1 hour, or you can take a High-speed train or book a private car or taxi.

3. Travel from Samarkand city to Samarkand State Medical University campus- to travel to the University campus, you can contact the university and ask for the transport options available to reach the university easily. you can also book a local private cab who has knowledge about the University so that you can reach the University campus more easily and without any problem.
