What after passing class 12^th with PCB?

PCB and PCM are two primary branches of science stream at class 12^th level (10+2 level). Other options also compulsorily include core subjects from PCB or PCM branches. Students have PCMB (physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology), PCMC (physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science) and PCBC (physics, chemistry, biology and computer science) options but core subjects are same. Despite other options most students opting for science stream opt for either PCB or PCM. Choice of branch depends on personal preference and traditionally medicine and engineering have been two most preferred career paths for students opting for science stream at 12^th level. Here we will try to answer the question what after passing class 12^th with PCB branch of science stream. 

If you ask a layman about the options for a class 12^th PCB pass out then the level of ignorance within the society in this regard will automatically get exposed. Answer will be as emphatic as it can get and you guessed it right, it will be MBBS. But reality is far from that. Class 12^th PCB pass outs don’t only have options beyond MBBS but even beyond medicine education itself. For a layman medical education is limited to MBBS but that is absolutely wrong thinking. Purview of medicine education is very broad and includes numerous options. 

Medical courses for class 12^th PCB pass outs

A successful career in the medical field is a dream for huge number of students and more than 20 lakh students appear for NEET UG (primary entrance exam for medicine courses), every year. To fulfil this dream students desiring successful medical career tend to plan well in advance. Many students start giving extra importance to biology even before passing 10^th grade as studying biology at 12^th level is compulsory to pursue medical education. Vast range of medical courses available can be too overwhelming for young 12^th pass outs and they quite naturally need guidance to make the right choice. 

After finishing 12^th grade one can choose from many medical courses to start career in healthcare. Here are some most popular ones:

MBBS (Doctor): This is obviously the most famous one, where one learns to diagnose and treat patients. MBBS basically stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and it is 5.5-year undergraduate degree required to become a licensed medical doctor in India and many other nations. Admission in India is extremely competitive and primarily through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), with eligibility being completion of 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

BDS (Dentist): Focuses on teeth and mouth issues. BDS stands for Bachelor of Dental Surgery, an undergraduate dentistry degree very common in India and other nations. The Bachelor of Dental Surgery is a program that prepares students to become dentists.

BAMS (Ayurveda): It is a 5.5-year integrated undergraduate medical degree program that deals with traditional Ayurveda, focusing on natural medications, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications to promote holistic health. This is an AYUSH course. Utilization of herbs and techniques like massage for healing is central to this approach of medicine. 

BHMS (Homeopathy): It is a 5.5-year undergraduate degree program in homeopathy, an alternative medicine system that puts emphasis on a holistic approach to health and initiates the body's natural healing process using highly diluted substances. This is an AYUSH course too. 

BUMS (Unani medicine): A five-and-a-half-year undergraduate degree program in India focusing on the traditional Unani system of medicine. This is also an AYUSH course. 

BSMS (Siddha Medicine): Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery is a 5.5-year comprehensive degree program. It is the study of medication that revolves around seven elements which are plasma, blood, fat, muscle, bone, nerve and semen. These seven elements are activated by air, water and heat. This is an AYUSH course. This again is an AYUSH course. 

BVSc & AH (Veterinary): BVSc & AH stands for Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, an undergraduate medical program that teaches students to diagnose, treat, and avert diseases in animals, encompassing medical veterinary science and the scientific management of animal health and productivity. The five-year degree course includes a 4.5-year study period and a one-year internship and is regulated ably by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI).  

BPT (Physiotherapy): Helps people recover in course of time from injuries or illnesses by improving their movement and strength. BPT stands for Bachelor of Physiotherapy, an undergraduate 5-year degree program focused on the science of human movement and the repair of physical function. The program equips students with skills to assess, diagnose, and treat physical disabilities and movement disorders employing non-surgical methods like exercise, hands-on therapy, and electrotherapy, readying them for careers as physiotherapists.

BSc Nursing: BSc Nursing is a 4-year undergraduate degree program that readies students for professional nursing roles by uniting theoretical knowledge in subjects like anatomy and pharmacology with hands-on clinical experience in various healthcare settings. 

BMLT: BMLT stands for Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology. It is a three-year undergraduate degree program that readies students to work as medical laboratory technicians and technologists by training them to carry out and analyze clinical laboratory tests to aid in disease diagnosis and treatment. Course focuses on subjects like hematology, microbiology, biochemistry, and the operation of sophisticated lab equipment.

BRIT: BRIT stands for Bachelor in Radiology and Imaging Technology. It is an undergraduate degree program that readies students for careers in diagnostic imaging and radiology. The program teaches students to operate advanced medical imaging technologies like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans, and provides both theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience. 

B. Optometry (Bachelor of Optometry): B. Optometry is an undergraduate degree program that readies students to be primary eye care professionals, specializing in vision care, diagnosing and managing eye diseases, and providing optical and contact lens services. The curriculum includes a very sturdy foundation in life sciences, optics, and visual science, along with extensive hands-on clinical training and field visits. 

BASLP: BASLP stands for Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. It is a 4-year undergraduate program that equips students with the skills to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals with hearing, speech, and language disorders. This comprehensive course includes theoretical study, hands-on clinical practice, and a compulsory one-year internship, readying graduates to work as audiologists or speech-language pathologists in various settings like hospitals, clinics, and special schools.

B. Pharma (Bachelor of Pharmacy): B. Pharma (Bachelor of Pharmacy) is a 4-year undergraduate degree program that educates students in the science of medicines, covering drug preparation, dispensing, and their positive or negative effects on the human body. The curriculum, approved by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) is focused on subjects like pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and patient counseling. 

Eligibility and Entrance Exam for above mentioned medical courses

To pursue MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS and BVSc & AH one must meet specific eligibility criteria and pass the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) - UG, the sole national entrance examination for these courses. Anyone from general category has to secure minimum 50% aggregate marks in these three subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). For reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC), a minimum of 40% is required, and for PwD candidates, it is 45%. Age of any candidate should be at least 17 years. There is no upper age limit. Not only Indian nationals, even NRIs, OCIs, or foreign nationals are eligible. 

To be eligible for a BPT course, one must complete class 12^th with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as compulsory subjects, securing at least 50% marks (with variations for reserved categories) and be at least 17 years old. Admission is primarily merit-based, but some colleges also require candidates to pass national-level exams like NEET or CUET, or state-level and university-specific entrance tests. Similarly for BSc Nursing course one must have passed 10+2 (or equivalent) with a science stream including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English, with a minimum of 45% aggregate marks, and be at least 17 years old. Admissions are usually through entrance exams at the national (e.g., AIIMS. NEET), state, or university level, which can include subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.   

To be eligible for a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) program, one generally needs to have completed 10+2 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as core subjects, often with a minimum aggregate score of 50%. While many colleges offer direct admission, others require candidates to pass an entrance exam, such as MET or a university-specific test.  To be eligible for a BRIT (Bachelor of Science in Radiology and Imaging Technology) program, one generally needs to have completed 10+2 (or equivalent) with a science background, including Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and meet a minimum aggregate score, very often 50% or 55%. The selection process usually involves an entrance exam, a merit-based system, or a blend of both, with some institutions also conducting interviews or counseling sessions.

To be eligible for a Bachelor of Optometry (B.Optom), one must complete class 12^th in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics as compulsory subjects, usually with a minimum aggregate of 50%. Admission is granted either through merit-based selection based on one’s 10+2 marks or by qualifying for an entrance exam, which can either be institution-specific or a national-level exam like NEET. Similarly, to be eligible for the Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP) program, one needs to have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics as core subjects, typically with a minimum aggregate score of 50% (though this can vary by institution). To be eligible for a B. Pharmacy program, one must have passed 10+2 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and either Biology or Mathematics as compulsory subjects from a recognized board, usually scoring around 50% aggregate marks. Non-Medical courses for class 12^th PCB pass outs

Whole lot of non-medical courses are also available to class 12^th PCB pass outs. Most important among them is B.Sc. Agriculture.  B.Sc. Agriculture is a 4-year undergraduate degree program focused on the science and technology of farming, covering subjects like agronomy, plant breeding, soil science, animal husbandry, and agribusiness. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience through field visits, labs, and internships. To be eligible for a B.Sc. Agriculture program, one needs to have completed 10+2 (Class 12) with a science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics) with a minimum score of 50-60%, though this can vary by institution. Admission is primarily based on performance in entrance exams like CUET, ICAR-AIEEA, or state-specific tests like KEAM or AP EAMCET, or through a merit list based on one’s 12th-grade marks. B.Sc. Agriculture is only one example of non-medical courses available for 12^th PCB pass outs.
