PMCH will celebrate its 100th anniversary
In 25 February 2025, Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) will celebrate its 100th anniversary. On February 25, President Draupadi Murmu will visit Bihar for a one-day trip to participate in the college's centenary events. On the same day, President Murmu will also unveil the new building of PMCH. Preparations for this occasion have already begun. The centenary celebrations of PMCH are set to take place in the Bapu Auditorium on February 24 and 25, 2025. A significant number of doctors from the state, along with many alumni from both India and abroad, are anticipated to attend the centenary celebrations of PMCH.
PMCH was formally inaugurated in February 1925
Patna Medical College, located in Patna, was founded in 1874 under the name Temple Medical School. Initially, it accepted 30 students, and the total tuition fee for the entire program was merely Rs 2 per student. This system remained in effect until 1925. Subsequently, the Temple Medical School relocated to Darbhanga, leading to the establishment of a new medical college recognized as Prince of Wales Medical College in its place. The formal inauguration of this medical college took place on February 25, 1925. The construction of the college's buildings was made possible through contributions from various princely states of Bihar, including Darbhanga Maharaj. The inaugural class comprised 35 students who were transferred from Medical College Bengal (now known as Calcutta Medical College in Kolkata) to Prince of Wales Medical College in Patna. This institution can rightfully be regarded as a pioneer of medical education in Bihar.
PMCH will be the second largest hospital in the world 5,462 beds
Covering an expanse of 48 acres, PMCH is being constructed to become the second largest hospital globally, featuring a total capacity of 5,462 beds. The comprehensive redevelopment initiative for PMCH is anticipated to be finalized by 2028, unfolding in three stages with a projected budget of Rs 5,544 crore.
For this hospital, which will stand as the largest public health facility in India, a helipad has been incorporated on the rooftop for air ambulances to land. Health Minister Mangal Pandey states, "To design this hospital, we visited the nation’s leading hospitals to ensure it meets world-class standards. Every amenity and arrangement has been considered to transform this hospital into a world-class facility.' He asserted, "Taiwan has a hospital with 10,000 beds. We will succeed in constructing an even larger hospital than in China. This is a momentous occasion."
