SMVDIME Jammu & Kashmir Secures 50 MBBS Seats: LG Thanks PM Modi and JP Nadda

With 50 MBBS seats being awarded by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Jammu and Kashmir's healthcare and education scene leapt forward on 9th September 2025. This new medical college in the Reasi district will launch its first batch during the 2025-26 academic session and will be a milestone on the road to the region attaining world-class medical education. This is a game-changer for NEET 2025 Jammu and Kashmir aspirants, educators and health care professionals.

Introduction to the MBBS Programme of SMVDIME

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has been at the forefront of starting SMVDIME, and operations began in November 2024 in the administration block of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) in Kakryal. The new programme has important details:

  • Seat Allocation: 50 MBBS approved in the 2025-26 session, with counselling in progress, which is confirmed by SMVDIME Executive Director Dr. Yaspaul Sharma.
  • Affiliation and Training: The college has 26 specialities of hands-on training and is affiliated with SMVDU, and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspecialty Hospital is the teaching hospital.
  • Long-term Plan: At the SMVDSB meeting on August 19, 2023, the 71st meeting passed a long-term plan to expand to 100 seats.
  • Equity in Leadership: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha praised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, who have made this possible, and its importance in improving access to healthcare.

It is supposed that the college will be fully equipped in the near future, making it a centre of medical excellence in J&K.

Why SMVDIME Matters for J&K

Accessibility of SMVDIME fills such important gaps in the J&K medical education and health:

  • Greater Accessibility: The 50 additional MBBS seats increase access to local applicants and will reduce reliance on colleges in other states, as the number of seats will increase in J&K.
  • Rural Healthcare: SMVDIME will work to generate qualified physicians to serve underserved communities, which are in line with the national goals, such as the Karnataka 450-seat expansion.
  • World-Class Education: Becoming part of SMVDU and training at a superspecialty hospital guarantees a high quality of education, as LG Sinha emphasises.

This relocation is based on the recent steps by J&K, as the number of MBBS seats has been growing in the last several years, which supports the healthcare system of the UT.

Student and Healthcare Implications

SMVDIME launch transforms the admissions of J&K MBBS 2025:

  • Increased Opportunities: The 50 seats will provide more NEET entrants with an opportunity to pursue their studies locally, which will not put them under the pressure of competition in the national arena (1.15 lakh MBBS seats in 2024-25).
  • Niche Training: The Narayana hospital offers 26 different specialities to graduates, which equip them with a wide range of career opportunities, including in general practice and super-specialisation.
  • Healthcare Boost: The graduates will tend to work in rural regions of J&K to solve the problem of doctor shortage, as seen in other states such as Rajasthan.
  • Money: Government college fees are cheaper compared to the private ones (e.g., Rs 27 lakh at Dr. D.Y. Patil), but students must confirm information on NEET 2025 counselling costs.

New medical colleges are being established across the world as SMVDIME is a reflection of similar programmes in other countries, such as Malaysia (new public medical schools) and the UK (NHS-supported training expansions), and these programmes are meant to support the needs of the region. States such as Uttar Pradesh (1,300 new seats) and Maharashtra (11,795 seats) are also widening in India, but J&K is emphasising underserved regions.

Problems and the Way Ahead

The entry into SMVDIME has obstacles:

  • Infrastructure Completion: The college needs to complete the facilities to fulfil the requirements of NMC, as mentioned in the new colleges across the country.
  • Counselling Logistics: NEET 2025 counselling needs to communicate effectively to prevent the same delay witnessed in previous rounds.
  • Retention: Incentives such as those in Tamil Nadu might be needed to ensure that graduates serve rural areas of J&K, so they do not migrate to urban areas.

Candidates must keep an eye on the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) or NMC websites in regard to counselling and allotment of seats.
