NMC has approved 68 new PG medical seats in Maharashtra, additional seats anticipated
Mumbai: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted approval for an additional 68 postgraduate (PG) medical seats in Maharashtra, offering promising opportunities for aspiring medical students in the state.
According to a report by Indian Express, these additional seats will be available across four existing medical colleges for the academic year 2024-2025, with potential for even more seats as further approvals are processed.
Approval of 68 New PG Medical Seats
The recent approval of these seats marks a significant milestone in the field of medical education in Maharashtra. The following medical colleges have benefitted from this development:
1. Terna Medical College, Nerul: This well-known institution has been granted 22 additional PG medical seats. This expansion aims to address the increasing demand for specialized healthcare professionals and strengthen the college's capacity to offer high-quality medical education.
2. Prakash Medical College, Sangli: Prakash Medical College has received 12 new PG seats, which will help the college diversify its programs and cater to a wider array of medical disciplines, ultimately contributing to enhanced healthcare services in the region.
3. Civic Medical College, Nerul: Civic Medical College has been allocated 17 additional PG medical seats. This increase will allow the college to produce more qualified medical graduates and specialists, playing a key role in strengthening the healthcare workforce.
4. ESIC Medical College, Andheri: ESIC Medical College has been granted 17 extra PG seats. This will boost the college's educational offerings and support the training of healthcare professionals who are essential for the public health sector.
Additionally, Terna Medical College has been granted specific seats across various specializations, such as:
• 3 seats in community medicine and obstetrics & gynecology each
• 6 seats in pathology
• 8 seats in anesthesiology
• 5 seats in radio-diagnosis
Prakash Medical College has received seats in the following specialties:
• 3 seats in ophthalmology
• 4 seats in radiodiagnosis
• 5 seats in pediatrics
• 5 seats in obstetrics and gynecology
Civic Medical College Adds 17 New PG Medical Seats
In addition to the other institutions, Civic Medical College has seen an increase of 17 PG seats across several departments, including:
• 3 additional seats each in Anesthesiology and Pathology
• 2 extra seats each in biochemistry, general surgery, and pediatrics
• 8 seats in obstetrics and gynecology
• 4 seats in gynecology
• 3 seats in general medicine
• 2 seats in orthopaedics
Sudha Shenoy, a parent, expressed her approval of the increase in PG medical seats, highlighting that these colleges did not previously offer postgraduate programs. However, since the medical PG admissions have not yet been announced, she noted that more seats may be added once further approvals for current courses are granted.
2,303 PG Medical Seats Last Year
In the previous year, Maharashtra received approval for 2,303 PG medical admission seats, with 1,499 allocated for government colleges and 804 for private colleges. With the addition of these new PG medical seats by the NMC, the total number of PG medical seats in Maharashtra now stands at 2,371, with 1,533 government seats and 838 private seats.
This development is a significant step in enhancing the state's medical education infrastructure and addressing the growing demand for specialized healthcare professionals.
