Bihar Govt Hikes Stipend: MBBS, BDS, AYUSH & FMG Interns to Get ₹27,000 Monthly

On 2nd September 2025, the Bihar government took another historic step to grant a monumental stipend raise to MBBSBDSAYUSH, and Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) interns in the state. It addresses long-standing grievances of fair compensation as claimed by the State Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This is a sign to practitioners, teachers and stakeholders in the healthcare and education sector in Bihar that the next generation of medical practitioners is being grown. Get to know the details of this policy, its impact and how this policy impacts the healthcare scenario in Bihar.

A large Raise in Stipend

A monthly stipend increment to Rs 7,000 has been sanctioned by the Bihar Cabinet, and this would impact interns in a broad spectrum of medical and other health schemes. Key highlights include:

  • MBBS, BDS, AYUSH Interns: There will be an increase of up to 7000 rupees in the stipend of interns in government medical colleges, Patna Dental College, and AYUSH institutes (Ayurvedic, Unani, and Homoeopathy).
  • Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs): FMGs who undergo mandatory internship in government medical colleges will also get the same amount, i.e. 27,000 per month.
  • Physiotherapy and Cccupational Therapy Interns: the monthly allowance of this group doubles from 30,000 to 20,000, given the importance of their contribution to healthcare.

This will curb the outcry, particularly at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), where interns were demanding similar stipends as those found at the AIIMS Patna (Rs 32,000) and IGIMS (Rs 30,000).

Respondent: Does the literature show the realities of your experiences?

The rise in the number of tackles is a result of years of lobbying by MBBS interns who continue to mention that Bihar last stipend (at Rs 19,600) is still extremely low against other states (West Bengal 43,000; Odisha 40,000). Even though interns were insisting on a Rs 40,000 stipend, increasing the stipend to Rs 27,000 is a considerable step to address regional standards, bearing in mind the crucial roles and functions of the interns in the Bihar healthcare system.

Why is it important to the Healthcare of Bihar?

The consequences of such a reform in policy are wide-ranging:

  • Improved Motivation: More stipends will improve the motivation of training interns, and the quality of care during the training will increase.
  • Talent Attraction: The high compensation may be used to attract more students to the Bihar Medical Colleges and address the problem of doctor shortage.
  • FMGS Equity: Uniform compensation will help in establishing fairness that will enable the induction of FMGs into the workforce.
  • Systemic Growth: This growth is in accordance with other general health care upgrades, including the approval of seven new medical colleges at Kishanganj, Katihar, Rohtas, Sheohar, Lakhisarai, Arwal and Sheikhpura by the Cabinet.

The medical community has received this decision well and views viewed as one of the most important actions towards improving the healthcare ecosystem in Bihar.

Future Outlook

The stipend increase offers a platform that other states can use to identify good medical intern pay. In combination with the introduction of seven new medical colleges, Bihar will have an opportunity to expand training opportunities and access to healthcare, particularly in underserved regions. This is an action that underscores the commitment of the state to the creation of a robust medical workforce.
