Karnataka Adds 450 MBBS Seats: NMC Greenlights 2025-26 Expansion

A new era in medical education began in Karnataka on 3rd September 2025, when the National Medical Commission (NMC) gave its consent to add 450 more MBBS seats to the 2025-26 academic year. This increases the total number of MBBS seats in the state to 12,644, as compared to 12,395, providing hope to would-be doctors. This initiative promotes Karnataka as a medical training centre to teachers, medical personnel and stakeholders. Find out what exactly this development entails, how it will affect it, and how it will impact healthcare in the state.

An Ode to Medical Aspirants

Of the 450 new MBBS seats distributed by the NMC to institutions in Karnataka, there is a definite breakup:

  • 500 Seats in Government Colleges: 8 Government Colleges will have 50 seats each: Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences, Chikkaballapur Institute of Medical Sciences, Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences, Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute (Bengaluru) and Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences.
  • 50 Seats in Deemed University: Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavirmath Medical College (JGMMMC) in Hubballi gets 50 more seats.

Karnataka had suggested an increase of 850 seats; however the NMC passed 450 since some colleges have limited infrastructures and faculties. It is interesting to note that an application to increase seats in Sri Siddhartha Medical College was denied.

Guiding Past Challenges

By the beginning of 2025, NMC dismissed the proposal of Karnataka to add three new medical colleges and an 800-seat increment due to insufficient infrastructure and faculty. But, with the new NMC Chairman Dr. Abhijat Sheth, who declared a national increment of 8,000 seats, Karnataka got these 450 seats. It is partially to meet the demand of the state of 50 seats in 13 government colleges, and 100 seats in 2. There were also problems like the NMC failing to renew 200 seats in Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Belagavi, following a case of bribery and also the reduction of one seat in Chitradurga government medical college during NEET-2025 counselling.

Why This Expansion Matters

This addition of seats redefines the history of medical education in Karnataka:

  • Increased Seats: Seats are raised to provide opportunities to future physicians.
  • Greater healthcare: More graduates will enhance the doctor supply in Karnataka and particularly in rural locations.
  • Affordable Education: Government college seats aim at affordability, which helps out a large number of students.
  • Policy Development: This is supported by the endorsement, which shows that Karnataka is meeting the standards of NMC although they were late earlier.

The health care community has not been left behind in this development, which has been identified by the medical community as a potential for improving the health care system in Karnataka.

The Path Forward

Karnataka is bound to distribute 12,644 MBBS seats in the second round of NEET-2025 counselling as Prasanna H., Executive Director of the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), confirmed to me that they have 12,644 MBBS seats across 71 medical colleges. This development supports the goal of the Indian government to develop the capacity in medical education that will result in a healthy medical system.
