This distribution gives NEET PG aspirants a broad picture of the available MD, MS and diploma-level postgraduate medical capacity for the 2026–27 admission cycle.
NMC Clarifies That the Matrix Can Be Updated
One of the important points mentioned by NMC is that the published seat matrix is not necessarily the final version for the entire counselling cycle.
The current matrix does not include applications that were pending for:
- Increase in intake of existing PG courses
- Commencement of new PG courses for 2026–27
If such applications are subsequently approved, the additional seats or courses may be incorporated into an updated seat matrix.
The matrix can also be revised following decisions of MARB, the competent Appeal Committee or another competent authority.
Colleges Must Follow Approved PG Intake
NMC has also directed medical colleges and institutions to admit students only against the approved PG intake reflected in the latest notified seat matrix.
Colleges cannot admit candidates beyond their approved intake. Admissions exceeding the approved capacity may constitute a violation of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 and applicable regulations and may attract regulatory or penal action.
Candidates Should Check the Latest Seat Matrix
For NEET PG 2026 counselling, candidates should verify the latest available seat matrix before finalising their choices.
Important details to check include:
- Medical college and institution
- MD/MS speciality
- Approved number of seats
- Government, private or deemed status
- Any subsequent NMC-approved increase in intake
- Updated or revised seat matrix
Candidates should not rely solely on an older seat matrix, as NMC may add new courses, increase intake or make corrections through subsequent updates.
How the NMC Seat Matrix Will Help in NEET PG Counselling
The seat matrix is an important reference for MCC and state/UT counselling authorities while preparing counselling-related seat information.
For aspirants, it provides a course-wise view of the postgraduate medical seats approved for the academic year. It can also help candidates understand the availability of different specialities across government, private and deemed institutions.
However, the actual seats available to a candidate during a particular counselling round can depend on the applicable counselling authority, quota, category and subsequent seat-matrix updates.
