Andhra Pradesh Hikes Stipend for MBBS, BDS Interns by 10%; PG, MDS and DNB Students Get 5% Increase

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a revision in the stipend paid to medical and dental trainees in government medical and dental colleges across the state. Under the new order, MBBS and BDS interns will receive a 10% increase, while postgraduate medical, MDS, DNB and super-speciality students will receive a 5% hike.

The revised rates have been made effective retrospectively from January 1, 2026, providing financial relief to junior doctors and medical trainees whose stipend revision had been pending since the beginning of the year.

Key Update: MBBS and BDS house surgeons will now receive ₹28,497 per month, while postgraduate and super-speciality trainees will receive revised stipends based on their year of training.

New Stipend Rates in Andhra Pradesh

Under the revised structure, the monthly stipend for MBBS/BDS house surgeons has increased from ₹25,906 to ₹28,497.

The revised postgraduate and super-speciality rates are as follows:

CategoryExisting Monthly StipendRevised Monthly Stipend
MBBS/BDS Interns₹25,906₹28,497
PG 1st Year₹60,823₹63,864
PG 2nd Year₹61,528₹64,604
PG 3rd Year₹64,767₹68,005
Super-Speciality 1st Year₹80,500₹84,525
Super-Speciality 2nd Year₹82,800₹86,940
Super-Speciality 3rd Year₹85,100₹89,355

The revised structure also covers MDS and DNB students, with the postgraduate categories receiving the 5% increase.

Stipend Hike Effective From January 2026

A key point in the government order is that the revised stipend is applicable from January 1, 2026, rather than only from the date on which the order was issued.

The decision follows months of discussions over stipend revision. The Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (APJUDA) had been seeking an increase from January 2026, and the issue became part of the association's wider demands during its 2026 agitation.

Following intervention by the Andhra Pradesh High Court, the government constituted an Expert Committee to examine the existing stipend rates, the demands of junior doctors and stipend structures in neighbouring states. The committee held discussions with APJUDA before submitting its recommendations.

Effective Date: The revised stipend rates are stated to apply retrospectively from January 1, 2026.

3.5% Annual Increase From 2027

Another important provision is the introduction of an automatic annual stipend enhancement of 3.5%.

The annual revision will begin from January 1, 2027, and similar annual revisions are planned thereafter. This creates a mechanism for periodic increases instead of waiting for a separate revision exercise each time.

Future Revision: A 3.5% annual stipend enhancement is planned from January 1, 2027, followed by similar annual revisions.

Government's Additional Financial Burden

The revised stipend structure is expected to increase the state's financial commitment by approximately ₹34.08 crore annually. The increase covers trainees across government medical and dental institutions in Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier government figures indicated that Andhra Pradesh was already spending approximately ₹48.84 crore per month, or around ₹586 crore annually, on stipends for MBBS/BDS interns, postgraduate students and super-speciality trainees.

Why the Decision Is Important for Medical Students

Stipend is an important consideration for MBBS interns and postgraduate medical students because they continue to work in teaching hospitals during their training period.

For MBBS and BDS students, the revised monthly amount of ₹28,497 represents an increase of ₹2,591 over the previous ₹25,906.

For postgraduate students, the revised stipend now ranges from ₹63,864 in the first year to ₹68,005 in the third year, while super-speciality trainees will receive up to ₹89,355 per month in the third year.

Background of the Stipend Revision

The revision comes after a prolonged dispute between junior doctors and the state government over stipend rates.

APJUDA had been demanding a higher revision, with the issue remaining unresolved for several months. The association's agitation in August 2026 included a strike at government medical colleges and hospitals. The Andhra Pradesh High Court subsequently intervened, after which the strike was called off and discussions with the government continued.

The government ultimately approved a 10% increase for MBBS/BDS interns and 5% for PG, MDS, DNB and super-speciality trainees, along with the annual 3.5% revision mechanism.

What Students Should Know

The latest revision applies to trainees covered by the government order in government medical and dental colleges and teaching institutions in Andhra Pradesh.

Students should distinguish these revised government stipend rates from stipend policies of individual private medical colleges.

Important for Students: The actual amount payable to a student should be checked against the applicable government order and institutional rules for the relevant course and training period.

Conclusion

Andhra Pradesh has revised the stipend structure for medical and dental trainees, with MBBS and BDS interns receiving a 10% hike and PG, MDS, DNB and super-speciality students receiving a 5% increase. The revised rates are effective retrospectively from January 1, 2026.

The government has also introduced a 3.5% annual increase from January 1, 2027, providing for regular future revisions. The move follows months of representations, protests, court intervention and discussions between the government and junior doctors.
