A debate held in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha the other day, following questions by Jhajjar MLA Geeta Bhukkal to Health Minister Arti Singh Rao, brought to the fore the state of medical education in Haryana. A Diverse Medical Education Landscape

Maharaja Agrasen Medical College (Agroha), a government institute, charges Rs 8.1 lakh for the five-year MBBS course, serving as an intermediary alternative between government and private establishments. But private colleges carry a steeper price. Colleges of Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences graduates in NC Medical College (Panipat) and Adesh Medical College (Kurukshetra), demand Rs 12 lakh per annum for the degree with a 7.5% increase a year.

Tuition Fees: From Affordable to Pocket Saver

The cost of education is one of the most important reasons, probably, for many would-be doctors, but Haryana’s fee range massively depends on the institute you choose. Government colleges have the cheapest alternatives, where the five-year MBBS at institutes such as PGIMS (Rohtak), Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College (Nuh) and Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (Karnal), costs a total of Rs 4.22 lakh. ESIC Medical College (Faridabad) is even cheaper with just a Rs 1 lakh fee a year and is attracting students who can’t – and don’t want – to pay more.

At the higher end are private colleges under deemed universities. MMUMSR in Mullana, Ambala charges Rs 18 lakh per annum with a 10% annual increment, whereas Amrita School of Medicine in Faridabad is the highest at Rs 25 lakh per year (amounting to a whopping Rs 1.25 crore for a 4.5-year MBBS course). These numbers speak volumes about the investment that private medical education involves, leaving government colleges as the most revered choice for students from middle-class or economically weaker sections of society.

What This Means for Future Doctors

Throughout the Indian Medical System, Haryana’s medical colleges are some of the least expensive in India, but the way tuition costs are spread there reflects broader patterns of tension and opportunity in India’s medical system. Government colleges are a cheap way to get there, if you can get a seat against severe competition, through exams like NEET. Private colleges are less overcrowded seat-wise, but cost is an issue that many families can’t overcome. It is this gap that highlights how scholarships, bursaries and government interventions to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds are desperately needed.

The provision for reserved seats for SC, EWS and PwDs is a small step to inclusivity and ensures that for anyone who wants a career in medicine, it is talent and ambition rather than financial status that decides if one can afford to study medicine. For students applying to private colleges, you will need to know planned hikes in annual fees and incidents above these, like hostel fees (which are over and above the tuition fee).
