KMC Manipal’s New AI Department Will Revolutionise Healthcare Training

Hey, you’ve likely already witnessed how fast tech is transforming the field of healthcare - technology like AI has already begun to help doctors in diagnosing disease, and running hospitals more efficiently. Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Manipal has already taken a huge step in anticipating this curve by setting up a Department of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare on 29 August 2025.

What’s the Deal with This New Department?

KMC Manipal, one of India’s premier medical institutes, have not only added a new course, but a new department, with an entire focus on applying AI in health care. This concerns the training of doctors, researchers and other health workers to use tools based on artificial intelligence that might, for instance, interpret medical scans, predict patient outcomes or optimise hospital logistics. This isn’t some side initiative; it’s an active attempt to make AI an integral part of medical education.

The department’s offerings will include a variety of programs, from postgraduate degrees to shorter certificate courses. These include practical skills such as applying AI to diagnostics, understanding patterns in patient data, or even confronting ethical questions about tech and medicine. If you’re a doctor who wants to do more, or a student who wants to stand out, it’s an opportunity to become proficient with how to wield AI to make your work faster and more comprehensive.

Why AI in Healthcare Is a Big Deal

You’ve likely observed the vast amount of data that doctors are confronted with these days: patient records, imaging studies, and test results. AI can sort through that data to catch things that humans might miss, whether it’s early signs of cancer in an X-ray or patterns that indicate risk of heart disease. But there’s a catch: it works only if doctors know how to use it correctly. This is where KMC’s new department comes in. It's teaching people to bring medical knowledge and AI together, which is important because if India's health system is expected to expand to 780 medical colleges from the current 529, and 1.7 lakh MBBS seats from the existing 56,000 by 2025, and yet it's not going to add significant value on its own.

Teaching AI to work better with doctors isn’t about making human physicians obsolete but optimising their time. For example, in rural areas where specialists are few, AI can assist a general doctor in making specialist-level decisions. It can also reduce errors and save time, which is a big deal when hospitals are running thin. KMC is betting that by teaching these skills, it will create graduates who can lead this shift.

What You Can Study

The department has offerings for varying points in your career. If you’re a working physician or researcher, you can take certificate courses to familiarise yourself with AI tools without a degree. For students or early-career professionals, there will be postgraduate programs that delve into things like machine learning for diagnostics or AI-driven treatment planning. You’ll work with actual datasets, use the latest software, and learn from the best in medicine and tech.

KMC is partnering with technology companies and other research institutes to ensure the courses remain both relevant and applied. In other words, you’re not just learning theory - you’re gaining skills to use directly in a hospital or research lab. The programs are located on KMC’s Home Campus in Manipal, a campus with excellent infrastructure, so you are learning in a good environment.

How to Jump In

Application details are not yet fully in, but you can keep an eye on KMC’s website (www.manipal.edu) for updates. This is the kind of program that tends to open up applications in the fall for the following academic year, so it would expect deadlines to be late 2025, earliest 2026. You should probably have a degree in medicine, science or a similar field, and some postgraduate courses may ask you to take an entrance exam or attend an interview. And watch KMC’s site or social media for details related to eligibility, fees and how to apply.
