JoSAA Counselling 2026
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is responsible for conducting the counselling process for admissions into prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs across India. Admission to IITs is based on JEE Advanced 2026 ranks, while NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs will rely on JEE Main 2026 scores for seat allocation.
The official JoSAA counselling dates will be available on the official website, josaa.nic.in. All candidates who qualify for the JEE Advanced 2026 exam, along with those holding JEE Main 2026 ranks, will need to register for JoSAA counselling to secure a seat in their preferred undergraduate engineering programs offered by these institutions. The JoSAA 2026 registration process is expected to begin shortly after the declaration of JEE Advanced 2026 results. The registration and choazice filling process will be conducted exclusively online in June 2026.
JoSAA 2026 counselling will be conducted in five main rounds, each involving seat allocation, confirmation, reporting at the allotted institution, and payment of required fees. Any remaining seats after these rounds will be allocated through the CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) counselling.
JoSAA 2026 will release a seat matrix, outlining the available seats across various categories for all participating institutions. In the previous session, a total of 59,937 seats were made available.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts a comprehensive counselling process for admissions into IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and GFTIs. The process involves multiple rounds of registration, choice filling, seat allocation, and document verification.

JoSAA 2026 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria to participate in JoSAA Counselling 2026. Below are the detailed eligibility requirements for admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
๐ Eligibility for IIT Admission 2026
Candidates must qualify JEE Advanced 2026 and meet the required performance criteria in Class XII (or equivalent).
Class XII Performance Criteria:
- Year of Passing: Candidates must have appeared for Class XII (or equivalent) for the first time in 2025 or 2026.
- Required Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics must be compulsory subjects.
Candidates must satisfy at least one of the following conditions:
- Scored at least 75% aggregate marks in Class XII (65% for SC, ST, and PwD candidates).
- Ranked in the top 20 percentile of their respective Class XII board examination.

JoSAA Cutoff 2026 - Opening and Closing Ranks
After each round of JoSAA 2026 seat allotment, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority releases the opening and closing ranks for all participating institutes and courses. These ranks indicate the range of ranks within which admissions are granted for a particular course and institute.

Failure to do so will result in seat cancellation, and they will be ineligible for further rounds. Candidates must check the portal regularly, as no separate notifications will be provided.
Female Supernumerary Seats in JoSAA 2026
Female supernumerary seats are additional seats created exclusively for female candidates to improve gender balance in IITs, NITs, IIEST, and some IIITs. These seats are added above the normal intake - they do not reduce seats available to male candidates.
What Does "Supernumerary" Mean?
Supernumerary means extra seats created beyond the approved seat count. These do not replace or eat into any existing seats.

Two Seat Pools Exist for Every Program
Gender-Neutral Pool
Open to both male and female candidates on equal merit basis.
Female-Only Pool
Exclusively for female candidates. Male candidates cannot compete here.
How Seat Allocation Works for Female Candidates
A female candidate does not manually choose between the two pools. The JoSAA algorithm automatically checks both, giving her two effective opportunities.

Why Female Cutoffs Are Usually Lower

Female closing ranks often go significantly lower than male cutoffs because of this larger effective seat pool.
Is This the Same as Reservation?
Technically, no. JoSAA treats this differently from traditional reservation. Female candidates remain eligible for merit-based Gender-Neutral seats as well. It functions more like an additional opportunity system rather than a reservation.
Category Reservation Still Applies Inside Female-Only Seats
Female-Only seats are further divided by category. All standard categories apply here:

A Female OBC-NCL candidate competes across Female OPEN, Female OBC, Gender-Neutral OPEN, and Gender-Neutral OBC pools โ depending on rank and eligibility.
Order of Allocation for a Female OBC-NCL Candidate
JoSAA considers seat pools roughly in this order. OPEN is always checked before category benefit if merit permits:

The 20% Female Representation Goal
The Ministry of Education introduced this system with a target of achieving at least 20% female representation across all participating institutions and programs through JoSAA counselling.
Does It Reduce Seats for Male Candidates?
No. Female supernumerary seats are created as additional seats above the existing pool. Male candidates continue competing for the same Gender-Neutral seat count as before. There is no reduction in their seat pool.
Can a Female Candidate Get a Gender-Neutral Seat?
Yes, and it happens very commonly. Top-ranked female candidates often secure Gender-Neutral seats directly on merit. That is why many high-ranking female candidates appear in the Gender-Neutral pool rather than the Female-Only pool in JoSAA allotment results.
