JoSAA Counselling 2026

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is responsible for conducting the counselling process for admissions into prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs across India. Admission to IITs is based on JEE Advanced 2026 ranks, while NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs will rely on JEE Main 2026 scores for seat allocation.
The official JoSAA counselling dates will be available on the official website, josaa.nic.in. All candidates who qualify for the JEE Advanced 2026 exam, along with those holding JEE Main 2026 ranks, will need to register for JoSAA counselling to secure a seat in their preferred undergraduate engineering programs offered by these institutions. The JoSAA 2026 registration process is expected to begin shortly after the declaration of JEE Advanced 2026 results. The registration and choazice filling process will be conducted exclusively online in June 2026.
JoSAA 2026 counselling will be conducted in five main rounds, each involving seat allocation, confirmation, reporting at the allotted institution, and payment of required fees. Any remaining seats after these rounds will be allocated through the CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) counselling.
JoSAA 2026 will release a seat matrix, outlining the available seats across various categories for all participating institutions. In the previous session, a total of 59,937 seats were made available.

After each round of JoSAA 2026 seat allotment, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority releases the opening and closing ranks for all participating institutes and courses. These ranks indicate the range of ranks within which admissions are granted for a particular course and institute.
The participating college or university
The specific course or branch of study
The admission category (Home State, Other State)
The reservation category (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS)
Gender-specific seats, if applicable
The highest rank (lowest numerical value) admitted
The lowest rank (highest numerical value) admitted
Candidates can check the detailed opening and closing ranks on the official JoSAA website after each round
Candidates allotted seats must upload the required documents on the JoSAA 2026 portal for online verification. Below is the comprehensive list of essential documents required for admission.
If any document verification queries arise, candidates must respond via the JoSAA portal within the given timeframe. Failure to do so will result in seat cancellation, and they will be ineligible for further rounds. Candidates must check the portal regularly, as no separate notifications will be provided.
Female supernumerary seats are additional seats created exclusively for female candidates to improve gender balance in IITs, NITs, IIEST, and some IIITs. These seats are added above the normal intake - they do not reduce seats available to male candidates.
Supernumerary means extra seats created beyond the approved seat count. These do not replace or eat into any existing seats.
Example - IIT Kanpur CSE:
| Regular Gender-Neutral Seats | 100 |
| Female-Only Supernumerary Seats | 20 |
| Total Seats Available | 120 |
Gender-Neutral Pool
Open to both male and female candidates on equal merit basis.
Female-Only Pool
Exclusively for female candidates. Male candidates cannot compete here.
A female candidate does not manually choose between the two pools. The JoSAA algorithm automatically checks both, giving her two effective opportunities.
| First Check | JoSAA checks Female-Only seats first. |
| Second Check | If not allotted there, JoSAA checks Gender-Neutral seats. |
Example โ IIT Delhi, Electrical Engineering:
| Candidate | Effectively Competing For |
|---|---|
| Male Candidate | 100 Gender-Neutral seats |
| Female Candidate | 120 seats effectively (100 GN + 20 Female-Only) |
Female closing ranks often go significantly lower than male cutoffs because of this larger effective seat pool.
Technically, no. JoSAA treats this differently from traditional reservation. Female candidates remain eligible for merit-based Gender-Neutral seats as well. It functions more like an additional opportunity system rather than a reservation.
Female-Only seats are further divided by category. All standard categories apply here:
A Female OBC-NCL candidate competes across Female OPEN, Female OBC, Gender-Neutral OPEN, and Gender-Neutral OBC pools โ depending on rank and eligibility.
JoSAA considers seat pools roughly in this order. OPEN is always checked before category benefit if merit permits:
| Priority | Pool Considered |
| First | Female-Only OPEN |
| Second | Gender-Neutral OPEN |
| Third | Female-Only OBC |
| Fourth | Gender-Neutral OBC |
The Ministry of Education introduced this system with a target of achieving at least 20% female representation across all participating institutions and programs through JoSAA counselling.
No. Female supernumerary seats are created as additional seats above the existing pool. Male candidates continue competing for the same Gender-Neutral seat count as before. There is no reduction in their seat pool.
Yes, and it happens very commonly. Top-ranked female candidates often secure Gender-Neutral seats directly on merit. That is why many high-ranking female candidates appear in the Gender-Neutral pool rather than the Female-Only pool in JoSAA allotment results.
Important: If Female-Only seats remain vacant after all rounds, they are not transferred to male candidates. They remain female-exclusive since they were specifically created to improve gender balance in these institutions.
| Category | Advantage |
|---|---|
| Female GEN | Largest visible advantage. Cutoff rank can improve by hundreds to several thousand ranks depending on branch. |
| Female OBC-NCL | Very strong combined benefit - category reservation and female supernumerary advantage work together. |
| Female SC / ST | Substantial cutoff relaxation due to the combined effect of category seat pool and female-only pool. |
| Female PwD | Maximum layered benefit - female-only pool, PwD pool, and category pool all interact simultaneously. |
JoSAA 2026 explicitly clarifies the following regarding OCI and Foreign Tag candidates:
| OCI / PIO (I) Candidates | Eligible for Female Supernumerary seats, provided they qualify through the applicable JEE route. |
| Foreign Tag Candidates | Not eligible for Female Supernumerary seats. |
The most common mistake families make is comparing a female candidate's rank against male cutoff data. Always check the Gender-Neutral closing rank and Female-Only closing rank separately before drawing any conclusion.
Many female candidates unnecessarily avoid IIT CSE, IIT circuit branches, and top NIT CSE seats because their families see the male cutoff and assume admission is not possible.
Practical Example
| Candidate Profile | Female GEN - CRL Rank 8,500 |
| Male Cutoff for Branch | 6,000 - Family concludes: admission not possible |
| Actual Female Cutoff | 9,500 - Branch is comfortably within reach |
This is why female supernumerary analysis is one of the most important and high-value areas in JoSAA counselling today.
The JoSAA Counselling 2026 schedule will be published on the official website after the results of JEE Advanced 2026 are declared. The counselling process typically takes place in multiple rounds.
Seat allotment and online reporting
